GA GA - Shirley, 87, & Russell Dermond, 88, Putnam County, 2 May 2014 - # 2

Putnam county deputies are investigating what they are calling a homicide and an abduction. The sheriff's office released a statement saying they believe they found the body of 88-year-old Russell Dermond. They said they are "virtually certain" it is the body of Russell Dermond and that he was "definitely the victim of a homicide."

Family members went to Dermond's home at the Great Waters Community on Lake Oconee in Putnam county. Shirley Dermond was not at the home when police arrived, and they "presume she may have been abducted at this time."

I only got the end of the report on WSB but did hear 60 or 70 deputies from neighboring counties were helping in the search today. The reporter said Sills is still declining to call in the GBI for help. More info on that coming up during the 5 PM broadcast.

Putnam County investigators are still hunting leads to help them solve the killing of Russell Dermond and the disappearance of his wife, Shirley.

“There’s nothing,” Sheriff Howard Sills said early Monday.

Investigators had hoped that with increased traffic on Lake Oconee over the weekend that a major clue would turn up or that someone would find a trace of the 87-year-old woman who vanished from the couple’s waterfront home.

Sills spent more than three hours with an FBI behavior specialist examining the probable personality of someone who would kill an 88-year-old man, remove his head and leave the body in the victim’s garage.

Authorities are looking at all possibilities, including a theory that the couple was abducted and his body returned to the house after the killing.

Sills said rumors of organized crime involvement are unfounded.

“No, the man wasn’t in witness protection,” he said. “He wasn’t going to testify. There’s no evidence of any kind of torture.”

Investigators believe Russell Dermond’s head, yet to be recovered, was severed after he was killed.

Officials said that based on their investigation, they have been able to narrow the timeframe of the crime to somewhere between 4:30 p.m., on Friday, May 3 – when the mail was delivered – to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, when the couple did not show up for a party.

I don't understand this. Why not have a full search of that peninsula? I have been looking at it on google maps. It seems unreal, impossible that this crime was not committed by someone right there in the immediate vicinity or someone nearby on the lake side. No one came meandering along until they just up and decided to go to the Dermond's residence. Someone came past that gate or came by boat. I know this is no news flash but it has really struck me after looking more closely at google maps. I think if someone came through the gate then it was someone with a legitimate reason to be there. If someone came by boat it would have had to be at night.

Another thing I have wondered... if the security camera was out and a guard did not check an incoming vehicle, would the family have a legitimate reason to sue the development? Not suggesting or implying a motive for any family involvement. Just wondering how much protection this community really offers to residents who pay big bucks to be there.

Don't know if this applies to this area or not but I know much of the forested area of Georgia is covered in Kudzue. The locals would know if this applies to this area. If it does, searching would be very difficult. Just a thought as to the search.

mck16, Kudzu is in its initial growing stages around Oconee and wouldn't be an issue at this time. Kudzu has tunnels where K9s can travel, as does the deer and other animals. No worries..

It concerns me that Sheriff Sills did not request the resources of the GBI or a SAR.. They are free investigative resources.. Why would you not utilize all available resources? This tells me that Sheriff Sills and the GBI must have had issues in the past, or that Sheriff Sills is old school; "This is the way that we have always done it", attitude...
