Missing teen Megan 'likely murdered'

May 3, 2011

The disappearance of Canberra teenager Megan Mulquinney almost 30 years ago remains a mystery, but an ACT coroner has found it is extremely likely she was murdered.

Ms Mulquinney, 17, went missing in July 1984 after finishing work at Woden Plaza in Canberra's south.

Police never found a body but two men who were questioned over the disappearance remain people of interest.

Prime suspect in long-running Canberra missing persons case 'did not act alone'

Prime suspect Paul Vincent Phillips died in April. Police think there are accomplices. As with other cases police announce it close to a significant date. It will be 34 years since she disappeared on Saturday in 2 days time.

"Police said a number of people had given them fresh information about the disappearance of Megan Mulquiney, since serial sex offender Paul Vincent Phillips died in April."

"Almost 34 years later to the day, ACT police have announced they do not believe Phillips acted alone.

A 2009 inquest into Ms Mulquiney's disappearance determined it was extremely likely she was murdered by a person or persons."

"His victims would often appear young, have child-like features, they were petite in build … and would wear their shoulder-length hair out.

"This description matches that of Megan."

'I need proof': Mother of Megan Mulquiney still desperate for answers

Canberra's police thought they knew who was responsible for the disappearance for 17-year-old Megan Mulquiney, who was last seen leaving work in 1984.

But police reopened the case in 2018 and have been unable to link serial rapist Paul Vincent Phillips to Ms Mulquiney's disappearance.

Police are now looking for leads elsewhere.

Megan Mulquiney was last seen at about 12.15pm, standing outside the western entrance of the Woden Plaza adjacent to Big W.

Ms Mulquiney finished her Saturday shift at Big W in Woden Plaza at around 12.05pm on July 28, 1984 and left the mall to catch a bus home.

Witnesses saw her at the plaza exit heading to the bus interchange at 12.15pm but she never made her bus.

Her mother Dorothy Mulquiney called police that afternoon but her daughter hasn't been seen since.

Ms Mulquiney was born in 1966 and would be 56-years-old.

In 1984, Megan Mulquiney, a 17-year-old high school student in Canberra, disappeared from a busy shopping mall after finishing her shift at Big W. She has not been seen or heard of since.
