Leon County Sheriff's Office detectives continue to search for a missing teen.
Ivan Aguilar, now 16 years old, has not been heard from for 10 months.

He was last seen on May 8, 2014 around 10:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Mastic Lane in western Leon County.
Detectives say he ran away from home and that the night he ran away he was messaging friends on the KIK message application and made comments about leaving his home.

Since that day he has not made contact with any of his friends or family.
According to family members, Aguilar does not have any identification with him and has no known means of communication. He may be using a black and orange bicycle for transportation. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Ivan Aguilar is asked to contact the Leon County Sheriff’s Office at (850) 606-5800.

A Leon County teenager is featured in a new video by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

In the video, Ivan Aguilar's family makes a tearful plea for his return...

"He hasn't contacted mom or dad or any other family," LCSO Detective Teresa Howard said, "and when he ran away he knew to leave his cell phone and completely clean it out to where it was back to factory settings, so he knew that we could track him with his cell phone and he left it at home."

Ivan was only 15 when he got on his bike around midnight May 8, 2014, and pedaled away from his home off Highway 20. He hasn’t been seen since earlier that day.

He took off to avoid problems that must have seemed monumental at the time. Earlier that night, his girlfriend’s mom discovered the two had been sexting, and she told Ivan she planned to report it to school officials.

About a week before that, his parents grounded him after he borrowed money from the girl to buy a pair of Jordan basketball shoes.

Just before he left home, Ivan messaged his best friend, told him he was running away and asked him to go with him. He said he was going to go into the woods to get away. Ivan ended up leaving alone.

The next day, his younger sister said he hadn’t shown up for school. His parents noticed his bike was missing and found his cell phone, which had been restored to factory settings.

He’d been active on Facebook and other social media. But his activity stopped completely.

Come on back, Ivan. This is just a blip in a whole life time that's filled with choices, good and bad. You are so young. Mistakes happen. Just come back and fix these. Don't make something inconsequential into something consequential.

Find your way home.

The 15-year old was last seen on Sunday, May 18, 2014 in the 300 block of Mastic Lane in Western Leon County.

Aguilar was 15 years old when he ran away in July 2014 and today marks his 17th birthday.

"We're always going to be looking for you. Please come back," his mother said in Spanish. "We don't see happiness here," his father said. "Everyone needs you. Everyone loves you. We're never going to forget you. We're going to do whatever it takes to find you."

Leon County Sheriff's Detectives say Aguilar disappeared with only his bike and the clothes on his back and intentionally left his cell phone behind.

His charcoal drawings of race cars still lie on his desk. His plaid shirts still hang in his closet. And the new pair of sneakers that got him in trouble still sit unworn in a shoe box on his dresser.

Two years after Ivan Aguilar ran away from home, his room remains frozen in time.

“It’s been extremely sad and very difficult,” said his mom, Emma Gutierrez, who spoke through an interpreter, Leon County Detective Terry Howard. “Even though it’s been two years, every day is a struggle.”

[...]

Investigators say any number of things could have happened to Ivan. He could have gotten lost in the woods or picked up along the side of the road. He could have joined a work crew of some kind or fallen victim to human trafficking.

“He could have ended up in a different city,” said LCSO Lt. Tony Drzewiecki. “There’s all sorts of exploitation that can occur. With runaways, that’s one of the things we have to worry about.”
