Search underway for missing hiker -

Alaska State Troopers, SEADOGS, and Juneau Mountain Rescue will continue searching on Monday for a missing woman believed to be hiking in the vicinity of Mount Roberts. Buis was last seen Thursday or Friday, and her locked car found was at the Mount Roberts trailhead. She did not show up for a planned meeting with friends on Saturday morning.

More than likely she is hurt. Either by an animal such as a bear, or she may have fallen in some way and hurt herself. Lost? Doubtful. With the way that Juneau is set up, for lack of better words, all she would have to do is look behind her, so to speak. The Gastineau Channel is a major land marker so to speak, in knowing where you're at in Juneau. It's possible that she traveled a great distance on Mt. Roberts, but there aren't very many trees up towards the summit. I've been on that mountain many times. I'm certain that she's hurt in some way outside of her wanting to stay up there for one reason or another. I hope she's found soon. Snow generally stays on the mountains year round and avalanches are a concern in May.

Oh how I miss Juneau....

Authorities search for missing Juneau woman -

Sharon Buis of Juenau was supposed to go for a hike on the Mount Roberts trail, but never caught up with her companion, said Alaska State Trooper spokesman Tim DeSpain. The planned destination was Hawthorne Peak. The search area involves “rugged mountainous terrain with deteriorating snow conditions at higher elevations and thick vegetation at lower elevations.” Buis is believed to have hiking experience.

A U.S. Coast Guard H-60 helicopter is conducting another aerial search of the Mt. Roberts and Mt. Juneau areas looking for 48-year-old missing hiker Sharon Buis.

A Juneau Mountain Rescue member is onboard directing the search and thermal imaging devices are being used. This is the Coast Guard’s second scan, and the fourth helicopter search overall since Sunday.

“No new information prompted this, it’s just double checking areas, and checking and double checking,” says Alaska State Trooper Sgt. Timothy Birt.

Alaska State Troopers say Southeast Alaska Dogs Organized for Ground Search, or SEADOGS, have detected the scent of Sharon Buis on the Mt. Roberts trail, where teams have been searching.

Her scent was first detected on the trail above Mt. Roberts Tram Sunday. Tuesday morning, a different search and rescue dog detected her scent closer to the Mt. Roberts trailhead near the parking lot on Basin Road. Buis’s black Honda Civic was located there Saturday morning by a friend.

Trooper Sgt. Timothy Birt says these are good leads and confirms the search team is on the right track, but a lot more information is still needed.

Renee Holmes spent the first two days “crying at the drop of a hat” after learning her friend Sharon Buis was missing. Tears turned to anger during the next two days, as Holmes asked herself over and over, “Why did she take off without telling anyone?”

<snip>

Frustration levels are growing by the day for those who know Buis, an experienced hiker who was reported missing when her car was located at the Mount Roberts trailhead on Saturday night. Searchers are frustrated, too.

“There’s been a lot of effort that’s gone into it, and there’s been no new leads,” Alaska State Trooper Sgt. Tim Birt said, adding, “We’re all emotionally involved in it.”

I really hope they find her , how is the weather there.

This has me thinking of Meredith Emerson and that's not good. I hope and pray that Sharon is somewhere safe! Time is moving along...

Luke Holton doesn’t know 48-year-old Sharon Buis, but he’s helping to organize the volunteer search effort that started Wednesday, less than one week after Alaska State Troopers called off the official search...

One of Buis’s hiking friends said Buis owned a yellow backpack. It’s an unofficial lead, Holton says, but it’s something to look for. He hopes the volunteers can find anything that will restart the official search.

“The best option we would have is to find some of her personal property up here or anything else,” Holton says. “The further we go in, the less tracks you’re going to find in the snow, so once we get past Icy Gulch and you find tracks on the gulch or tracks on the peak of Gastineau, that could potentially also be enough evidence.”

Many residents were impacted by the news of missing hiker Sharon Buis.

That’s because it could have been any one of us. Juneauites pride themselves on the accessibility of our wilderness. So many of us escape alone for a quick jaunt on the Perseverance Trail, a short hike out the rolling trails of Sandy Beach, or a work-break run up the Salmon Creek Trail. It’s true many live in Juneau because amazing vistas are around every tree and at the peak of every mountaintop. You don’t have to travel far off the trails to escape into our rainforest.

It’s easy to get complacent, especially when you know the area well. That complacency could lead to leaving your cell phone in the car next to your water bottle (because its clunky) and that wind breaker on the passenger seat (because the clouds have nearly dissipated).

Still no leads on Juneau’s missing hiker

The Juneau Police Department is reaching out to the community for information on still missing hiker Sharon Buis. Detective Nick Garza is with the criminal investigations unit. He’s been working on the missing persons case since Alaska State Troopers exhausted the initial search May 29th. Garza says there have been no developments or leads. 48-year-old Buis was last seen May 23 at Alaska Marine Lines.

New lead sheds no light on missing hiker

Authorities have not stopped looking for 48-year-old Juneau resident Sharon Buis.

[snip]

“He was in an area down in the Glory Hole. He’d come across a bear down there and he was wondering if the bear was down there looking for something to eat or had come across something. And on his way back up, he just caught a foul odor. Maybe something decaying or something like that,” says Garza.

[snip]

The searchers found nothing.

Garza says that’s been the only lead in the past month.

A local man with experience exploring Juneau’s old mining shafts, Brian Weed, is leading a small team to search for Buis inside shafts on the back side on Mount Roberts. Weed believes Buis may have slipped while hiking Mount Roberts, slid down a snow gulch and landed in one of the abandoned shafts, which would have been covered by snow at the time.

“She may not be down there,” Weed warned in a phone interview Thursday, adding he doesn’t want to give people false hope. “But there’s at least two (mining shafts) you could have fallen in if you were sliding down snow, and they’re covered most of the year. Probably end of August, September, is the best time to check them out when they’re uncovered.”

Celebration of life planned for missing Juneau hiker
A celebration of life has been planned for a Juneau hiker who went missing earlier this year. The ceremony honoring Sharon Buis is scheduled for Monday evening in Juneau. The 48-year-old Buis went missing in late May. The experienced outdoorswoman did not show up for a scheduled hike and her car was found at the Mount Roberts trailhead. Searches of trails in the area were conducted by the Alaska State Troopers and volunteers. Juneau police have kept the matter open as a missing-persons case.
