GUILTY LA - Katherine Martinez, 23, pregnant, murdered, Terrytown, 8 June 2014

GRETNA, La. (WGNO) - Jefferson Parish deputies are trying to figure out who stabbed a pregnant woman to death inside her apartment on the Westbank.

Investigators say 23-year-old Katherine Martinez was found lifeless, lying on the kitchen floor. Martinez’s family tells deputies she was in her final trimester.

Authorities say the stabbing happened early Sunday morning, just before 1 a.m., at Martinez’s apartment on the 600 block of Whitney Avenue near Gretna.

The news has left her neighbor’s in shock.

“I didn’t really hear the commotion or nothing like that, but if I would tried to intervene; to try to help this lady who is carrying a child. That’s not right. People don’t get involved, I don’t get involved. There’s no Christianity any more,” says neighbor Sonte Hebert.

As of Sunday evening JPSO deputies had not named any suspects or a motive.

The Jefferson Parish coroner says a pregnant woman who was killed over the weekend in unincorporated Gretna died from strangulation.

Katherine Martinez, 23, was stabbed as well, but the coroner ruled that the official cause of death was strangulation. Though the unborn child was not stabbed in the attack, the child did not survive.

Mullaly said her client and Martinez were in a sexual relationship, but she became pregnant with another man’s baby.

“She had (Calderon’s) DNA under one of her fingernails, but that was the only evidence,” Mullaly said. “Emilio didn’t have an alibi – he gave four different statements before finally admitting to it.”

A Larose man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a pregnant Terrytown woman. Emilio Calderon, 31, was given the mandatory punishment Wednesday (Oct. 7) for second-degree murder of Katherine Martinez last year.
