DETROIT -
The names of more than 140 unclaimed bodies at the Wayne County Morgue have been released as the morgue prepares to bury them free of charge.

The Local 4 Defenders uncovered how a lack of money led to mass burials -- as many as four bodies buried on top of each other. A group of funeral home directors is trying to ensure this never happens again. They are putting up the cash to bury all of the bodies, as well as any unclaimed bodies in the future -- in real caskets and in individual plots...

I have to say this - these are unclaimed, and yet they are using the space and resources to bury them as opposed to cremation? We are one of few cultures with such death rituals.

Sad to see so many people younger than me on that list. I am early 40s.

I read the comments - some of those listed are now being claimed, so that's a good thing.

I, too, noticed how young some of them were.

yea, I figured that was why they even listed the names at all - a second chance to claim. I agree, that is a great thing.

In a WDIV interview yesterday with a representative of Ira Kaufman Funeral Home, it was stated that once the bodies were claimed, final disposition would be determined by next of kin. The families' wishes will be considered regarding funeral arrangements, religious services, cemetery, etc. In that case, cremation would likely be an option.

Is it safe to assume that these names have been run through missing person databases etc.? I am a bit taken aback that they were mass buried, 4 on top of each other. WTH
