WASHINGTON (AP) — Under pressure from Congress, celebrity Dr. Mehmet Oz on Tuesday offered to help "drain the swamp" of unscrupulous marketers using his name to peddle so-called miracle pills and cure-alls to millions of Americans desperate to lose weight.

Oz appeared before the Senate's consumer protection panel and was scolded by Chairman Claire McCaskill for claims he made about weight-loss aids on his TV show, "The Dr. Oz Show."

Oz, a cardiothoracic surgeon, acknowledged that his language about green coffee and other supplements has been "flowery" and promised to publish a list of specific products he thinks can help America shed pounds and get healthy — beyond eating less and moving more. On his show, he never endorsed specific companies or brands but more generally praised some supplements as fat busters....

I've never watched this guy and have only heard his name, before seeing some footage from his shows. For me he seems like a real skeevy guy. JMO

I watched him a few years back and appreciated that he had a showmanship quality to get his point across with regard to obesity and the need to get in shape. He's helped a lot of people. Perhaps the powers that be are disgruntled because he empowers people to make healthy changes thereby shortcircuiting the need for big pharma intervention (and all the money that generates towards the 1%) MOO

What congress is upset about is that he's making claims about things that are completely unsubstantiated and may have dangerous side effects.

Even if I could forgive Oprah for becoming such a self-absorbed narcissist, I will never forgive her for unleashing Dr. Oz and, even worse, Dr. Phil on humanity.

She was behind Dr. Oz! I knew about Dr. Phil, but not doctor Oz! :scared:

I always found Dr. Oz to be really creepy. I don't watch him.

Dr. Oz stopped being a "dr" a long time ago.
I get more spam with his crap, than Viagra.

At one point (long ago) he was a very effective, sincere doctor who helped many.

In the past, he had been a really good doctor with valuable insight and advice.

Now...I don't know what he is now! A crook? I don't know.

I agree with others, he is really creepy now.

How about Rachael Ray? I used to enjoy her cooking show before she got to be a LOUD, know-it-all talk show host. Wish the "girl next door" had stayed in the kitchen. :moo:

I don't watch her, but I have a crush on her. She's so cute. :loveyou:

Oz looks like a snake-oil salesman. Don't watch him and never will.

I agree AbbieNormal, he does look like a snake-oil salesman. I can't stand his show.

If she had also unleashed Dr. Laura, she would have scored a trifecta for offensive, harmful, and inane pseudo-experts.

(((((Hugs tezi!)))))

Can't stand him either. He gives me the creeps...

Yes, LindayNJ, my skeeve alert goes into over-time whenever I see him...LOL(((Hugs back)))

I'm not a "verified RN" here but the people who've worked with me know that I am an RN and have been since, well, over 35 yrs ago now... :)
I try to watch Dr. Oz sometimes because the " previews" or " Spoilers" sound interesting. Then, when I turn the show on, the man who is supposed to be a doctor is spouting off nonsense and in a lot of cases, telling people things that can hurt them. Like telling a diabetic on Insulin that Cinnamon will lower their blood sugar and they may not need Insulin. He's NOT going to follow up with that person or any other diabetic so he has NO RIGHT to give our herbal and folk medicine " cure- alls" like he is some sort of DOC-GOD.
I can't stand him. I hope he and his show are sued for all they are worth and I hope he scuttles off into obscurity before he can kill someone.
He is DANGEROUS most of the time.. 1 out of 5 shows will have SOME truth to them. Basic, ordinary truths, not medical science truth.
Last episode I saw, he was telling so many " home remedies" that are proven to be false that I won't even post them here for fear someone will try one out.
And the cinnamon thing I posted about COULD reduce SOME Hgb A-1C levels by a tiny fraction, but for most people, the placebo effect will be what helps them if anything does. Don't believe him. Please don't watch him and please don't follow his herbal, superfood or the day quackery.
IF I ever met the man I would tell him to his face that he violates every tenet of the Hippocratic Oath on his fame game TV show.
( Now my BP is probably up, LOL, and it's always normal.)
I've wanted to say something about what I consider to be a form of criminal medical malpractice for a very long time on here and just didn't know how to bring his name up. Thank you very much for the opportunity.

He gives me the creeps big time ! If he moved on my block I would warn my kids to stay away from him. He has that "cross the street vibe" just bouncing off of him. Skeevey is a great word for him.
