Gilroy police issue alert for missing woman

GILROY --
Police are asking the public's help to find a woman who went missing from her home early Monday morning. Noemi Coolbaugh, 49, was reported missing around 8:30 a.m. after she had left her home around roughly 7 a.m. without her cell phone or her purse, police said.

The search for a missing woman in the South Bay intensified Wednesday morning. Volunteers who have spent the past two years looking for Sierra LaMar are now lending their help in this newer case...

Coolbaugh’s family is worried sick, but very grateful for the volunteer’s help. Wednesday morning, search crews spread out along a creek and the perimeter of Gilroy’s Christmas Hill Park, not far from where Coolbaugh disappeared on June 22.

Searchers handed out fliers and planned to talk to both passersby and homeless people in the area.

Family members of a woman who vanished from her sister's Gilroy home are puzzled over how she left with no trace. And if she's dead, they wonder how her body couldn't be found, according to sister Myrna Flores.

The family of Noemi “Mimi” Coolbaugh hired a private investigator, who will search Santa Clara County for her. The investigator will also reach out to media in southern California, where the family has roots. The private search efforts come following efforts by the Gilroy Police Department to find her...

“We don't know what else to do,” Flores said.

Wow this is so sad. Worried for her!

Hopefully she's found before this but as a Northern California resident as soon as I hear Gilroy I think "Garlic Festival." There will be a lot of people in Gilroy visiting, staying at hotels, maybe wandering where people don't usually wander. Here's more on the festival: http://gilroygarlicfestival.com/. I hope she isn't still missing at that point but if she is, I wonder if they could put up flyers?

Time for Steve Coolbaugh these days is measured in “since she left.”

“Today is day 22 since she left,” the Cotati resident said Monday. That is, it has been more than three weeks since his wife, Mimi, has been missing...

He thinks she may have taken a train to the last stop in San Francisco and disappeared into homelessness. None of the couple’s bank accounts or credit cards have been used and Coolbaugh said he went back a month and didn’t find any evidence that she’d planned an escape.

Oh, this poor family!

On Monday, Mimi Coolbaugh’s sister Myrna Aguilar of Gilroy said she was in the Lake Tahoe area to put up missing person posters when she received a text message from Steve Coolbaugh just before 6:45 a.m. The message stated that he couldn’t live without his wife. She called Cotati police and asked that they check on him at the couple’s Pinecrest Court home.

Before they could, her 19-year-old nephew called her and said his father was unresponsive on the floor, she said.

“This is a nightmare — he took his life, he could not live without her,” Aguilar said. “His son is alone now.”

He texted Noemi's sister Myrna Aguilar beforehand and said he couldn't live without his wife. She alerted police but it was too late - his son found him unresponsive on the floor:

'Before they could, (arrive) her 19-year-old nephew called her and said his father was unresponsive on the floor, she said.

“This is a nightmare — he took his life, he could not live without her,” Aguilar said.

“His son is alone now.”

I feel so sorry for the son. :(

Coolbaugh's death has caused everyone to re-evaluate the case. Mimi's relatives have believed all along that Steve Coolbaugh had an alibi. On the morning Mimi disappeared, he was in church in Cotati, 122 miles to the north.

"As a family, we were convinced he was at services the morning this happened," his brother-in-law, Vince Flores, told me.

At the least, Mimi's disappearance and Coolbaugh's suicide remind us of how little we really know about what is happening in any troubled marriage.
