Oscar Pistorius: South Africa gears up for its 'trial of the century'

For the past month, world-class athlete Oscar Pistorius has spent his days inside a high-security government psychiatric hospital, an imposing complex that is one of South Africa's biggest and oldest mental health institutions.

The South African Olympian is accused of gunning down his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, through a locked bathroom door in his home on Valentine's Day of last year. His murder trial was halted when a defense witness testified Pistorius suffers from a psychiatric condition that affects is perceptions of danger.

Pistorius has admitted to the shooting but pleaded not guilty to pre-meditated murder, alleging he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder.

On Monday, when the trial resumes, he'll be one day closer to finding out whether the next place he'll be spending time is prison.

I have some beautiful homemade jelly/jam to go with these croissants but I can't share it with you - my neighbour made it and she's put her address on the label!

ETA: Sorry, photo came out sideways again. :(

Good morning/afternoon/evening to everyone :)

Looking forward to a few court appearances today - OP's and Andy Murray - who's playing against South African Kevin Anderson :D

Hello everyone! :seeya:

I almost forgot that we'd reconvene this morning!

I read recently that the psych eval findings were unanimous.

I'm looking forward to hearing the results.

WOW. I stand corrected. I thought it was going to be a very short day where they would talk about future court hearings. But sounds like they are diving back in. I am so curious.

I took a nice nap since the court starts here at half past midnight. My husband thinks I am nuts.

That's interesting to know .. I had thought the same as you!

I'm traveling overnight and forgot my earbuds - looking forward to the always helpful folks that post what is happening in court.

I must say the past 4 weeks has flown by. Cannot wait for the trial to resume!

"Relaxed Oscar returns to the dock", 30 June South African Times

"Staff described him as pleasant and as being "relaxed" during his time at the institution.

A psychologist, who may not be named as only the hospital CEO can speak to the media, said he had sat "outside in the garden quite a bit".

"He was very engaging with staff and other patients. The first 10 days, when he was being escorted to the hospital, he was very tense. You could see his irritation.

"But afterwards, when he was no longer escorted, he was very relaxed, even charming. Not like what he looked and behaved like on TV in court.

"I saw him several times outside. He spoke to lots of people, laughing and joking with some of the staff and patients."

Good morning!

In my country now: 08:54am and I'm coming from Baden-Clay trial directly without detours to Oscar Pistorius trial. Both cases in the particularly exciting phase!

I hope the four member panel assigned to evaluate OP's Mental state of mind has unequivocally and unanimously come to the conclusion that Dr Merryll Vorster's twelve page long or short 'quick fix' two day diagnosis of his GAD since his childhood is a lot of baloney.

Good Morning, Everyone. It is 3:00 am EST here in Michigan. Looking forward to all of your insightful posts.

Zwiebel, thank you in advance for your play-by-play.

Hi FromGermany - We've both had a quick dash from Australia to South Africa where everything is very quiet. I hope we've got the right day!

That feels like the longest 4 weeks I've been through! Strange to miss a trial!! Morning!
