Missing man's case stirs little concern

Mariel Garza, Columnist

Imagine that one day someone in your life your best friend, girlfriend, mother or neighbor suddenly, and without explanation, stops answering the phone. That's strange, you think. But certainly nothing to get alarmed about.

After a few days of silence, the worry starts to kick in. You knock on their door no answer. You call their friends, who know nothing. Your friend or relative is simply gone.

For every clear-cut missing-persons case like that of Natalee Holloway, who vanished in Aruba last spring after a drunken night out, there are hundreds of others who simply drop out of sight with little fanfare. And because the person isn't pregnant or a celebrity or a small child, you will probably never hear about them.

Tracy Spellman won’t give up on finding her missing brother, Robert. While she hasn’t succeeded in attracting local media to the story, (not for lack of trying) she did succeed with a well known Internet presence. Read the story on the Project Jason Voice for the Missing blog today. (link below) It’s entitled “A Victory for Tracy.” Thank you.

I wonder what happened to this young man? Something must have because most people don't just leave and never contact their family again. A year is a long time to be gone without any contact but I hope he just decided to leave home or his city and took off. Do the family think that he might have just taken off? Would he do that and not contact his family at all? I realize that he was 27 yrs when he went missing and he is old enough to do what he wants but would he do that? It is unbelievable how many people of all ages are missing. It's like a horror movie....it can't be real....but it is. Breaks my heart when I read about them and know that each person has a family at home heartbroken waiting for something...anything about their child.

Details of Disappearance

Spellman was last seen at approximately 8:00 p.m. on April 12, 2005 at a family member's residence in the vicinity of the 13500 block of Valley Hart Drive in Sherman Oaks, California.

When he did not visit his family as expected on April 13, they became concerned and stopped by his home. The residence was in disarray, which is uncharacteristic of Spellman. He wasn't there and has never been heard from again.

Spellman resided on Alhama Drive in Woodland Hills, California in 2005. He was renting a house, which was listed for sale, and he planned to buy it. The deal fell through and Spellman was served with an eviction notice the day he disappeared, apparently for nonpayment of rent. He was also sued by his landlord, who is a friend of Spellman's business partner.

Spellman's family says it is uncharacteristic of him to leave without warning. They describe him as a charismatic individual and an aspiring actor. He enjoys working out and spending time with his family.

He may be driving a blue 1998 Lexus GS400 with a rear spoiler or a green 2004 Porsche 911 convertible. He may have traveled to the Las Vegas, Nevada area after his disappearance, but this has not been confirmed. His family believes he may have met with foul play.

Some agencies give the place of Spellman's disappearance as Los Angeles, California. That city's police are investigating his case.

Circumstances of Disappearance

He was last seen at approximately 1:30 a.m. at a family member's residence in the 13500 block of Valley Hart Drive, in Sherman Oaks, California. Robert's family was expecting him to visit again on the evening of April 13, 2005 for dinner. When he didn't show up and didn't call, his family stopped by his rented home on the 5200 block of Alhama Drive in Woodland Hills, California the next day where things were found in disarray which is very unusual for him.

One of his co-workers at the luxury-car company in Downey, where he worked, suggested to his family that he might have taken an impromptu trip to Las Vegas. He may be driving a blue 1998 Lexus GS400 with a rear spoiler or a green 2004 Porsche 911 convertible. There has been no activity on his credit cards or bank accounts since he went missing. Robert reportedly had several thousand dollars in cash he was supposed to use in a car deal.
