A Tennessee man convicted and jailed for abusing his two infant children is charged with murder -- 23 years later.Anthony Shannon Lane was convicted in 1992 of beating his 5-week-old daughter Amanda so badly she lived the rest of her life in bed: blind and unable to talk or move, except for seizures, said her mother, Nancy Woodall-Holmes, who first fostered and then adopted Amanda.
Amanda died last year at age 22 and on Monday, Lane, 41, was charged with first-degree murder in Amanda's death.
I wonder how many perps realize that any injury they caused that leads to the death of their victim can trigger homicide charges? Even 23 years later. This is as it should be, especially with a child. Who knows what kind of impact Amanda might have had on the world had her father not crushed her skull? It is a testimony to her that she survived, but look at all he took away from her. Not to mention the fact that he did it again to his son.
If you are convicted of an assault of any kind that eventually leads to death, expect LE to come knocking at your door. I appreciate the dedicated members of this jurisdiction who felt that serving the time for the assault charge was not enough in this case.
