I just saw this on CNN. Thanks for starting a thread. Frightening week of plane crashes. Hoping this isn't the case.

Air Algerie has lost contact with one of its passenger aircraft nearly an hour after takeoff from Burkina Faso bound for Algiers.

A company source told AFP that some 110 people of various nationalities are listed as being on board the flight.

The source said contact with the flight was lost while it was still in Malian airspace approaching the border with Algeria.

"The plane was not far from the Algerian frontier when the crew was asked to make a detour because of poor visibility and to prevent the risk of collision with another aircraft on the Algiers-Bamako route," the source said.

"Contact was lost after the change of course."

The airline announced that the plane had gone missing in a brief statement carried by national news agency APS.
 
'MADRID—An Air Algerie airplane traveling from Burkina Faso to Algiers with 110 passengers and six crew members on board was reported missing Thursday by the Spanish company that operated the plane.

The plane, a Boeing Co. BA -2.34% MD-83 model with flight code AH5017, was scheduled to land at 0510 GMT, but never reached its destination, Swiftair, the operator, said.

"Thus far, we have no contact with the airplane," Swiftair said in a statement. The plane was traveling from Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, to Algiers, Algeria.'

There will be quite a few French as well as Algerian citizens on that plane, I should think.

In an e-mail statement, the French Foreign Ministry said they were: “totally mobilised, both at the crisis centre in Paris and in Algiers and Ouagadougou, where our embassies are in permanent contact with local authorities and the airline”. '

At least EU countries can get search support there very quickly, if only the plane can be found.

It doesn't look hopeful for there being survivors - otherwise there'd be reports of passengers using their phones, I'd have thought.
 
Reporting here that MD83 has been leased to Air Algerie for the past few days. Also tweeting plane is confirmed down in Niger, but I haven't found any other confirmation of that yet.

Looking at a map, it shouldn't have been anywhere near Niamey unless it was avoiding Mali airspace and flying over Niger. But then if thats true reports it was near the Algerian frontier can't be correct. Time will tell.

It is an impoverished country without SAR resources. It will need lots of help if the plane is to be found.
