'An American tourist's battered body has been found in a suitcase at an exclusive hotel on Indonesia's resort island of Bali and her daughter and daughter's boyfriend have been arrested over the killing, police said.

The body of Sheila von Wiese Mack was found on Tuesday stuffed into a suitcase in the boot of a taxi in front of the five-star St Regis hotel in the upscale Nusa Dua resort area of Bali.'

The 62 - year-old victim had been staying in the exclusive hotel with her daughter, Heather, 19, and her daughter's boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 21. She was found half naked and investigators say she had put up such a fierce struggle, she had broken her left hand.

The US Embassy in Jakarta says it is aware of the arrests. There doesn't seem to be any information about where in the US the three are from.

Oh wow. If this is the case, I'd have thought it would have reached the Chicago press;

'Of the search performed by some media, the name Sheila Von Weise Mack refers to the wife of the late composer and conductor, James L Mack. James L Mack had died in August 2006. James is known as one of the famous composers in Chicago. James L Mack besides has a wife named Sheila Von Weise Mack also has a son named HL'

Maybe it has. I'll check.

Sheila von Wiese Mack of Lake Shore drive, widow of James L Mack, composer, had a daughter at age 43, she said in this 2013 interview here. I believe Sheila was born in 1952, so that would make the age of the teenage daughter she talks about, 19 years old now.

This lady has a high profile and an even higher profile circle of acquaintances, it seems.

Interview starts pg 5.

Hmmmmm......

She had been staying in the hotel with her daughter, Heather, 19, and her daughter's boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 21, local police chief Djoko Hari Utomo told reporters.

Ms Mack and her daughter stayed in the hotel together for several days before the boyfriend joined them on Monday, Utomo said. Ms Mack was recorded on CCTV arguing with Mr Schaefer in the hotel lobby the same night, he said.

bbm

The taxi driver then waited two foreign guests who are checked out. The foreign guests could enter a large suitcase wrapped in a cloth, and put in the trunk of taxi, and three small suitcases placed in the front seat. However, after waiting up to two hours, two guests were not returned to the taxi. The taxi driver then reported to hotel security. Security guard then suggested the taxi driver took the car and the suitcase to the police station. Because the hotel security guard suspicious suitcase bleed.

It's a bit bizarre that the young couple thought they would get away with this. I don't understand why they didn't just get out of Bali ASAP - and why they didn't dump the suitcase somewhere rather than leaving it in the possession of a taxi driver to buy themselves more time.

Maybe they totally freaked out and panicked - because I'm not seeing a whole lot of rational thought going into their 'getaway' plan.

p.s. Thanks zwiebel for all of your fabulous work on this case!!:loveyou:

I agree. Police have said they are going to consider if this was a premeditated killing or not, but it certainly seems like panic to me.

I don't know if Bali has the death penalty....

ETA: Yes, it does. https://www.themonthly.com.au/issue/2008/september/1289779129/luke-davies/penalty-death
