Former premier Neville Wran’s daughter Harriet being questioned over Redfern stabbing murder of Daniel McNaulty

August 13, 2014 6:26PM

THE DAUGHTER of former Premier Neville Wran is being questioned over the stabbing murder of a man at a Redfern apartment block.

Harriet Wran, the youngest daughter of the former state leader who died on April 20 , was one of two people wanted, after 29-year-old Lloyd Haines faced Parramatta Local Court this morning for the murder of 48-year-old Daniel McNaulty on Sunday night,

Senior police sources have confirmed to The Daily Telegraph that Wran, 26, and a 30-year-old man of Asian appearance are wanted in connection with the double stabbing at the Walker St unit block.

She handed herself in to Cabramatta police station this evening.

HARRIET Wran was numbed by her ice addiction and frozen with terror during the stabbing murder of Daniel McNulty, it will be alleged.

Police will claim Wran and her boyfriend Michael Lee, 35, went to the Redfern housing commission block to buy $70 worth of ice.

It will be alleged Lee was armed with two knives and showed them to McNulty shortly before the stabbing at the Walker St home at 7.45pm on Sunday

This was all over the radio today.

Harriet Wran was living in "crack den" granny flat in Hunters Hill

She wore expensive fur coats and took her small dog everywhere, looking like "something you would expect to see in Double Bay".
But behind the doors of a Hunters Hill granny flat in 2012, Harriet Wran was living in what her then landlord has described as a "crack den".

Ms Wran, her boyfriend, Michael Lee, 35, and Lloyd Haines, 29, have been charged with murder.
Police allege the trio went to the unit with the joint intention of killing Mr McNulty.
-----
Brett James Fitzgerald, 42, a witness, was stabbed multiple times during the altercation and was taken to St Vincent's Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.
Following investigations, a red hatchback was found in Waterloo about 3pm on Wednesday, police said.

ICE doesn't give a damn about who your parents are, nor how educated or attractive you are.
It just wants to destroy you - unconditionally. :(

I've noticed comments on social media saying things like 'should just give her more knives' and 'wish she'd killed more of them' in reference to the deceased being a dealer and drug user. It's quite interesting (and I mean absolutely no disrespect to him or his family) and I wonder if the accused wasn't high profile if the attitudes would be the same? It's like that because she came from a wealthy 'good' family that it's OK! But I'd bet the same isn't so for her co accused.

Humans are funny creatures...

The wife of colourful NSW premier Neville Wran for 38 years was visibly distraught after returning from Brisbane where she had been visiting friends.
She refused to answer most questions but managed a very telling seven words when asked by The Daily Telegraph how her late husband would be coping with the news.
“I can hardly walk, let alone talk,” she managed.
About four years ago Harriet Wran was spotted with her mother Jill at the Golden Door Health Retreat. The two were there to deal with Harriet’s “issues”.

Maybe her mother had been trying tough love with her and that is why she wasn't living at home. Drugs do not discriminate between rich and poor.
You never know where it will hit next, maybe in your own home. JMOO

There have been quiet a few sympathetic writings published in the MSM such as the SMH.

I think it's easy for people to forget that the victim was many things: victim, father, son, loved one, addict, fighting his demons and a dealer.

Correspondence between Harriet Wran and co-accused Michael Lee and Lloyd Edward Haines target of jail cell raids

August 30, 2014

HARRIET Wran’s jail cell has been raided as she awaits trial over the alleged stabbing murder of drug dealer Daniel McNulty in a Redfern housing commission unit this month.

The cell is in the therapeutic unit on Silverwater Jail’s women’s wing.

Several correspondences between Wran, 26, co-accused Michael Lee and Lloyd *Edward Haines were seized. Their cells were also searched.

Police have said it was part of a continuing investigation into McNulty’s death.

Harriet Wran to remain in custody charged with murder

The daughter of the late NSW premier Neville Wran has been remanded in custody following a brief mention of the murder case against her in a Sydney court.

The pair, and another accused, Lloyd Edward Haines, 29, are charged with murder, attempted murder and aggravated break and enter over the death of Daniel McNulty during an alleged botched drug deal in a Redfern housing commission block on Sunday, August 10.

The matter was adjourned by magistrate Les Mabbutt until December 18 to allow the prosecution to complete its brief of evidence including the forensic and post-mortem reports, handwriting analysis, medical records and video evidence.

Ms Wran and Mr Lee did not apply for bail and will remain in custody.
Mr Haines is due to face court on Thursday.

Police will allege that Ms Wran had gone to the high-rise Housing NSW block on Walker Street with Mr Lee, her boyfriend of two weeks, and Mr Haines, whom she had just met, intending to score ice from Mr McNulty, a small-time dealer.

Mr Fitzgerald was taken to hospital and underwent surgery, later giving police descriptions of his attackers: "A male Aboriginal, a male of Asian decent and an attractive female."

Ms Wran's legal team has indicated she will fight the charges. She has told police she only went to the flat to score, and "froze" when the fight broke out, terrified of what her alleged accomplices would do. A confessed ice addict, she had been sleeping rough for weeks, her circle shrunk to the desperate men with her last Sunday night, one of whom was allegedly armed with a mason’s hammer, the other with a knife as long as his forearm.

What are her chances of being found guilty?

‘‘Harriet had eating disorders from very early on,’’ says one source. ‘‘It went on and moved into cocaine, as far as I know. Jill was always getting her from one rehab clinic to the next, she was beside herself trying to save this daughter. Now she is tormented by watching her self-destruct.’’
Another friend of Mrs Wran’s claims Mr Wran would ‘‘pose for photos with the children ... but he was just old, and beyond it’’.

It's a view vehemently rejected by his close friends, who say he adored the children and did his best to provide for them.

Others say few boundaries were imposed on the children and ‘‘whatever they wanted, they got’’. The children were often in the care of housekeepers, another source claims.

Mr Wran’s inner circle have been critical of what they claim were shortcomings in Jill's response to his increasing frailty. The couple had periodic separations in the years leading up to his death.

It's easier to give them money than discipline them and then to leave them with housekeepers. Jill Wran does not appear to have been a very caring mother but maybe she just gave up. Maybe probate has not gone through yet but how could Harriett have got social security benefits if she had already inherited an apartment?

All over $70 worth of ice but Harriett had no money, ID, credit cards on her when arrested on the Wednesday three days later and was still in the same clothes!

Neville Wran $40 million estate: Son Glenn Wayne Wran takes Jill Hickson Wran to court for bigger share

A day after Neville Wran's youngest daughter Harriet, 27, appeared in Central Local Court on a murder charge, his son Glenn Wayne Wran's case was heard in the NSW Supreme Court's family provision list.

The defendants are the estate's three executors and Glenn's stepmother Jill Hickson Wran. The executors are Glenn's 60-year-old half-sister Kim Wran Sheftell, Brian Dale and Nigel Stokes.

Neville Wran adopted the infant Glenn when he married his mother Marcia Oliver, a former showgirl, in 1946. The couple were married for 30 years and had their daughter Ms Wran Sheftell. She is married and lives in the US.

In 1976, at age 50, Wran married Jill Lesley Norton Hickson, 28, and they went on to have two children, Harriet and Hugo.

What has happened with this trial? Anyone know? I am curious about Harriet Wran.
