Authorities responded to a home in Bristol shortly before 7:30 p.m. Monday and encountered a resident running toward them carrying a child with a severe laceration to her stomach. Officers performed CPR on the girl, who later died at a hospital.

Police say the girl was Zaniyah Calloway. An 11-year-old child also was in the home but wasn’t injured.

The girl’s uncle, 36-year-old Arthur Hapgood, of Waterbury, is being held on $1.5 million bail on charges including murder, reckless endangerment and risk of injury to a child. He’s expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Bristol Superior Court. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer.

More officers responding to the home learned that the suspect was still in the home. Hapgood met police on the porch and was cooperative when they took him into custody, police said. He was naked at the time of the arrest, police said.

Arthur Hapgood, 36, of Waterbury, who is charged in the murder of the baby, allegedly lost control Monday night at 211 Park St. after getting high on chemical-laced pot. He grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed Zaniyah in the stomach while she was in the arms of Hapgood’s 11-year-old stepdaughter, who was trying to get away from him.

This, after Hapgood’s two teenage nephews tried to subdue him...

Watson and Grimaldi also said the initial responding officers saw a scene they are likely to never forget: A chaotic group of people screaming, “He’s in the house! He’s in the house!” accompanied by a 19-year-old holding a dying baby, desperate to get the child help.

Arthur Hapgood's criminal history dates back to 1996 when he was reportedly involved in a drive-by shooting.

On this past Sunday, police were called to Hapgood's home in Waterbury for a domestic incident, and there was a warrant for his arrest.

Police were called to his home on Drayer Street in Waterbury at around 9 p.m. Sunday night after he and his wife reportedly got into a fight.

His wife, Estacy Riquelmy told police that Hapgood punched her in the face over the weekend.

Witnesses told police that Hapgood was high on PCP, also known as "Angel Dust," on Monday night when he allegedly stabbed little Zaniyah Calloway.

Witnesses also said he may have smoked "wet," which is marijuana soaked in embalming fluid.

Arthur Hapgood, 37, said nothing during his sentencing hearing before Judge Joan K. Alexander at Superior Court in New Britain. He pleaded guilty to murder on Sept. 29 for the Aug. 18, 2014, killing of Zaniyah Calloway, who was left in the care of Hapgood's mother at her Bristol home.

"It truly was a horrific incident," the judge said. "It was a senseless incident and it really struck at the heart of a community … a 14-month-old eviscerated by a grown man under the influence of PCP."

Alexander also told Shakyia Clay, the child's mother, that she was sorry for the loss she suffered. "It is truly a tragedy your daughter will never be able to have a full life," she said.
