" Language experts say the masked killer sounds like a man in his 20s who was raised or educated in Britain. John O'Regan, a linguist at the University of London's Institute of Education, said the militant spoke with a "multicultural London English" accent but with more formal standard English pronunciation, suggesting that his words denouncing American actions in the Middle East had been carefully scripted.

"The person is taking great care to do 'posh talk,' as it were," O'Regan said. "They're very mindful of their p's and q's."

"Britain’s Metropolitan Police is involved in the hunt for him, as are British intelligence agencies and the FBI.

The Guardian newspaper on Thursday quoted an unnamed former captive who was held by the Islamic State group in Raqqa, Syria, as saying he appeared to be one of several British militants — nicknamed “The Beatles” by hostages — charged with guarding prisoners"

Anyone else think the perp looks like he is 'flat-footed" feet pointing outward?
Could also be footwear too big, or he is a dancer, theater trained? ( sort of kidding, sort of not kidding..) jmo

" Voices can change

British spy agencies have access to voice-recognition technology that can try to match features of the killer's voice to a pre-existing recording, such as an online video or intercepted phone call.

So-called "voiceprinting" isn't perfect — voices can change over time and the technology isn't as reliable as fingerprinting or DNA. But Western counter-terrorism officials have long made use of it — including in Britain, where surveillance aircraft have flown over cities in a bid to match recordings of terrorist suspects against live phone conversations.

Human intelligence may be at least as important as technology in tracking down the masked man.

British Muslim leaders have condemned Foley's slaying and urged anyone who knows the killer to speak to the authorities. Richard Barrett, a former head of counterterrorism for Britain's MI6 intelligence agency, said the militant would likely be recognized by "the intelligence community … but also the community from which this man comes."

"It’s like any other crime; there’s lots of little clues, and if you know where to look for them, they can help you solve the crime,” the counterterrorism expert told FoxNews.com. “It’s like looking for fingerprints, it’s the same thing.”

Voice analysis, in particular, could prove crucial.

“Linguistic technology is very good nowadays at matching voice characteristics,” said Ashraf. “If [the killer] has got a criminal background, there’s a very good chance that he could have been interviewed by police.” Voice recognition software could be used to compare the militant’s speech in the YouTube video to police recordings, he explained.

The expert also noted that the killer’s accent could prove valuable clues as to his identity. “There are speech experts who specialize in accents who are very good about identifying this information, both in terms of geography and ethnic group,” he said. “Your voice is partly shaped by your ethnic background.”

In the video, Foley’s killer speaks in an apparent British accent, possibly from London or Southern England. U.K."

A LONDON rapper and a former drug dealer, both of whom turned to extremist Islam, are among the UK’s potential suspects for the execution of US journalist James Foley.

Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary, 23, the so-called ‘hip-hop jihadist’ from Maida Vale, west London, went to Syria last year and has tweeted a picture of himself holding up a severed head while Aine Davis, 30, from Hammersmith, west London, is a former drug dealer and gang member who joined the militants in Syria.

"The basic facts are that the video released by self-styled "Islamic State" fighters shows a man killing American journalist James Foley. The masked man in the video speaks with a British accent - assuming that the voice has not been dubbed over from another source.

Some experts think the accent sounds like the man comes from London, as it is a mixture of multicultural speech patterns often heard on the streets of the city. However, that may be speculation given that the individual could have tried to deliberately change the way he speaks for the purposes of the video"

Net closes in on Jihadi John as MI5 want to question young medic

BRITISH security services were yesterday seeking an east London doctor who they believe might hold the key to identifying “Jihadi John” – the British extremist who beheaded American journalist James Foley this week.

MI5 and MI6 want to speak to Dr Shajul Islam, a 28-year-old NHS-trained medic previously accused of a role in kidnapping journalists in Syria.

Dr Islam and fellow UK resident Jubayer Chowdhury, 24, were charged in Britain over the claims but were released after prosecutors said the victims were unable to give evidence.

Authorities are also seeking the doctor’s younger brother, Razul, 21, who is believed to have gone to Syria last year, and may be fighting for the Islamic State, known as IS, Isil or Isis.

The brutality of ‘Jihadi John,’ the Islamic State militant who decapitated James Foley

By Terrence McCoy August 22 at 3:23 AM

Answers to those questions are unclear. But the militant now has an identity. As per the British press, the masked man is known as “Jihadi John.” The nickname speaks to claims slowly trickling out about the killer.

John’s accent, which experts contend signifies London origins, is the source of his alias, the BBC reported in a radio broadcast on Thursday. John is believed to lead a small cadre of three British militants who guard the Islamic State’s foreign hostages. Because of their captors’ accents, hostages called them “John, Paul and Ringo after the Beatles,” the BBC’s Frank Gardner reported on Thursday.

What We Know So Far About ‘Jihadi John,’ James Foley’s ISIS Executioner
By Joe Coscarelli Follow @joecoscarelli

One former hostage, who was held for a year by the group in Raqqa, “told the Guardian the British executioner is intelligent, educated and a devout believer in radical Islamic teachings.” According to a linguistics expert, John “probably has a foreign language background but it sounds like multicultural London English, which is people from all kinds of backgrounds who mix in the East End, a new kind of cockney.”

Considering that Mr Foley was a photo journalist, wondering if colour and composition of photo/video of him, was a calculated irony?
Perhaps one of the captors is a photography buff? jmo.

"Spies are close to identifying the hooded jihadist dubbed Jailer John who beheaded the journalist James Foley, Britain's ambassador to the U.S. revealed today.

'I can't say more than this but I know from my colleagues at home that we are close,' Peter Westmacott told CNN. 'We're putting a lot into it and there are sophisticated technologies, voice identification and so on which people can use to check who these people are'.

A ‘significant force’ of SAS soldiers and signallers have deployed to northern Iraq in the hunt for the extremists, who spoke with British accents and callously boasted of making personal fortunes from ransoms paid for other released hostages.

The gang openly talked of making so much money they could ‘retire to Kuwait or Qatar’, according to testimonies by former hostages obtained by The Mail on Sunday.

The revelation comes as CCTV footage emerged reportedly showing the moment five separate British jihadis strolled through the departure lounge of Gatwick Airport on their way to fight in Syria"
