Neighbors in a quiet corner of Lansingburgh were rocked Wednesday, August 20, by the brutal beating deaths of Michael Allen Lockrow and his wife, Maria, in their 1st Avenue home.

They were killed by intruders who kicked down their door just after 2 a.m. Police are looking for two men driving a blue 2013 Ford Escape SUV registered to the Lockrows' address.

Veteran officers said the crime scene was among the most savage they have seen.

A Rensselaer County grand jury on Friday indicted two men in the fatal beating of a couple in their Lansingburgh home in August... Jacob Heimroth and Daniel Reuter, both 33, were indicted on multiple counts of murder, burglary and grand larceny.

"This was a brutal crime," said First Assistant District Attorney Carmelo Laquidara. "We are ready for trial. The evidence is strong."

Curious what evidence there is connecting these two to the murders, however very thankful they are in custody and facing multiple charges.

A Rensselaer County judge has denied a prosecutor's request to force two men accused of killing a Lansingburgh couple to give DNA samples. Assistant District Attorney Shane Hug asked Judge Andrew Ceresia to compel Jacob Heimroth and Daniel Reuter, both 33, to submit to swabs of the inside of their mouths...

Officials with knowledge of the case said Reuter knew Allen Lockrow from the Lansingburgh OTB parlor where Lockrow went regularly to bet on races. In an Aug. 22 interview with the Times Union, Maria Lockrow's brother, Thaddeus Pietrak, said police should be looking at the OTB angle because there was talk that Lockrow had hit it big on a race.

Rumors about the size of the win were being exaggerated on the street, Pietrak said. "He had an uncashed $600 winning ticket," Pietrak said at the time. "It was still in his wallet."

Jacob Heimroth took the witness stand during an hearing to suppress statements and video and radio recordings made when he was arrested. Sept. 1, 2014 in Lansingburgh...

Heimroth was indicted twice. The first time Judge Andrew Ceresia dismissed the indictment for lack of sufficient evidence. Heimroth is now going to trial on the second indictment.

Heimorth's co-defendant Daniel Reuter pleaded guilty in April 2015 to two counts of first-degree manslaughter and second-degree burglary for his role in the Lockrows' deaths.

Jacob Heimroth guilty of 2 murder counts - August

A Rensselaer County Court jury found Jacob Heimroth guilty Tuesday of two counts of second-degree-murder in the 2014 beating deaths of a Lansingburgh couple while burglarizing their home.

The jury determined Daniel Reuter's testimony that he and Heimroth, 35, together killed Allen and Maria Lockrow on Aug. 20, 2014, in their mobile home at 709 First Ave., was corroborated by other evidence and witnesses' testimony.

The jury of eight women and four men during two days of deliberation found that Heimroth did not intentionally kill the Lockrows.

Heimroth also was convicted on a count of first-degree burglary, two counts of second-degree burglary and one count of fourth-degree grand larceny.

Heimroth gets 50 years to life for killing Lansingburgh couple - January

Ending three months of legal uncertainty, state Supreme Court Justice Andrew Ceresia on Wednesday rejected Heimroth's legal effort to overturn his murder convictions for the savage bludgeoning of Allen and Maria Lockrow in their mobile home in Lansingburgh on Aug. 20, 2014.

In turn, the judge imposed the 50-to-life term on Heimroth for a crime that netted Heimroth and his former codefendant $500.

"No mercy will be shown in this sentencing," Ceresia said, highlighting the "unspeakable and barbaric nature of the violence that the jury concluded that this defendant committed upon the victims."

On Wednesday, once the sentencing was finally over, Lockrow family members hugged each other saying, "Justice!"

Earlier, two siblings of Allen Lockrow asked the judge to slam Heimroth with the maximum prison time possible. The victim's sister, Frances Cesta ,blasted Heimroth as an "evil monster" who should never get out.

"Life is precious and you took the life of two innocent people, Allen and Maria Lockrow," she said in a letter read aloud by Joseph Rielly, the older brother of Allen Lockrow.

"We can only hope that you are reminded each day of the horrible deaths you caused by your vicious actions to this couple. No punishment the court gives to you will be enough. Society will be a little safer knowing you will not be free to hurt anyone else."

Killer gets 40 years in prison for Lansingburgh homicides

State Supreme Court Justice Andrew Ceresia imposed the sentence on Daniel Reuter, 35, that will keep him locked up for most of the next four decades for the Aug. 20, 2014 deaths of Allen and Maria Lockrow.

The prison term of two consecutive 20-year sentences for the first-degree manslaughter counts was reached as part of a plea deal that Reuter struck with prosecutors in April 2015 in which he testified against co-defendant Jacob Heimroth.

"Mr. Reuter is the one that confessed. We needed Mr. Reuter's testimony ... in order to convict his co-defendant," District Attorney Joel Abelove.

In addition to two counts of first-degree manslaughter, Reuter pleaded guilty to burglary and grand larceny, admitting he broke into the Lockrows' home and took their Ford Escape SUV after they were killed.

Reuter described during his guilty plea how he and Heimroth drank alcohol and smoked marijuana before going to the Lockrows' trailer.

Reuter testified that he beat Allen Lockrow to death with a baseball bat and that Heimroth used a 2-by-4 board to kill Maria Lockrow.

"Justice has been served," Abelove said. "These two individuals were caught and prosecuted."

Before he learned his fate, Reuter heard from Joe Reilly, Allen Lockrow’s brother.

“There are many days I shake my head in disbelief over the senseless act,” he said. “I ask myself over and over again how someone could be so evil.”

Reilly asked the judge for one thing after watching the trial play out for months.

“Your honor, I ask you put this animal in a cage where he belongs for as long as you possibly can,” he said.
