Galen Denler, 43, pleaded guilty May 6 to two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault. He must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence, meaning he'll be 80 before he is considered for release from the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Investigators said Denler videotaped the assault, which took place in the early morning hours of Jan. 6 and lasted about an hour. The victim managed to hit a redial button on her phone during the assault, and several friends showed at her residence and "detained" Denler after he fled to his car.
There was also evidence Denler used bleach to remove evidence of the assault.
A videotape was recovered from Denler's vehicle after he was arrested, and Barnard said he viewed the videotape. Denler held the camera and put it on a nearby table during the assault, investigators said.
"We have no clue what this young woman endured," Barnard said in court Friday. "I've seen the tape, judge. You don't want to see it or hear it. No one else should be asked to witness something like that."
