GUILTY MI - Marcy Lavigne, 48, dead, daughter injured in stabbing, Hubbell, 19 Sep 2014

Police responded to the scene of a stabbing complaint early Friday morning in Hubbell. At 3:30 a.m., police arrived at the home of a 48-year-old woman to find her dead and the woman’s 14-year-old daughter alive but suffering multiple stab wounds.

Police reported the suspect, a 42-year-old male whose name is being withheld pending arraignment, attempted to flee the scene in the woods by the house, but he was located and taken into custody around 5:30 Friday morning...

Police say the 14-year-old girl was transported from Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital to Marquette General Hospital in serious condition; however, police reported she was the one who called 911 and was coherent when police arrived at the scene to give a statement and assist in locating the suspect.

Paul David Moilanen, 42, of Hubbell is charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with the early Friday morning incident.

Houghton County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home around 3:30 a.m. and found Marcy Lavigne, 48, had been stabbed to death. Her 14-year-old daughter also suffered from multiple stab wounds, but is expected to recover.

Officials say Moilanen was Lavigne’s boyfriend. He remains lodged in the Houghton County Jail on a $2.5 million cash bond.

Moilanen was sentenced to 37 1/2 to 60 years in prison in Houghton County Circuit Court Monday for the murder of LaVigne and the attempted murder of her then-14-year-old daughter in September 2014...

Moilanen, 43, pleaded no contest in May to both charges...

Moilanen hit LaVigne's daughter, then stabbed her about 40 times in the face, arm, chest and back, also breaking her backbone and scapula. She has yet to regain use of her left hand.

When LaVigne tried to help her daughter, he stabbed LaVigne approximately 15 times in the neck, chest, back and heart, killing her.
