Scott Maxie, 61, a Cummins retiree, was found dead at about 9:30 p.m. in his Muscatatuck Outdoors shop in North Vernon.

The shop, located at 8485 W. County Road 200S, North Vernon, is just east of the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge. The shop was part of Maxie’s home.

Maxie had as many as 200 guns in his shop, according to gun dealer John Durham of John’s Gun and Tackle, North Vernon, who knew Maxie. Numerous firearms, both handguns and long guns, are believed to have been stolen from the shop, police said.

Indiana State Police arrested three Indianapolis men Monday night in connection to the murder of a Jennings County gun store owner... Dejaun Worthen, 23; Darion Harris, 20; and Darryl Worthen, 24, were arrested on preliminary charges of murder and robbery...

Darryl Worthen is a contracted FedEx man who just delivered to the gun shop Friday. Then Saturday, he and the other two suspects stopped by the shop together. Other customers came in the shop at the same time Saturday and saw the three men in there.

The prosecutor believes Darryl Worthen was the one who fired one fatal shot into Maxie’s face. Maxie was armed, but was found dead with his gun holstered.

Police in Jennings County continue their search for more than 40 missing weapons. One of them is the weapon they said was used to shoot and kill a man inside his gun shop...

The prosecutor didn’t say whether that will include seeking the death penalty, but, he did say more details will be released in the coming days. The suspects face preliminary robbery and murder charges. They are being held in the Jennings County jail without bond.

Police said they recovered four of the 45 stolen guns and some ammunition.

That is really sad. The store owner trusted Darryl because he delivered FedEx to his store/home, and was shot in the face by him. I'd like to see the death penatlity in this case.

It was absolutely premeditated murder. What would possess someone with a good job (FedEx is a good company to work for) want to rob someone who knew him? So sad to have your trust violated. Prayers for this the Maxie family. MOO

Three men charged with murder in the death of a southern Indiana gun shop owner appeared in court Monday...

They were joined by family members, who approached Scott Maxie's family after the hearing to apologize. Scott Maxie's sister told them she didn't hold a grudge.

"They had nothing to do with this. I know that sounds crazy, but they didn't send their boys down there to do that. They're just like us, they're going to lose their children too," said Christine Sheffield, Scott Maxie's sister.

Three men previously charged in state court with killing a southern Indiana firearms dealer and stealing dozens of guns now face federal charges and are eligible for the death penalty.

Jennings County Prosecutor Brian Belding said he supported the decision to move the cases against 25-year-old Darryl Worthen, his 23-year-old brother Dejuan Worthen, and their 20-year-old brother Darion Harris to federal court. "My goal is that the individuals responsible for this heinous act serve the maximum sentence under the law," he said.

Many counties in Indiana have been reluctant to seek the death penalty because the costs for such cases are significantly higher.
