CALGARY- The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in to investigate the conduct of Calgary Police Service members, following the murder of a young Calgary man.

18-year-old Colton Crowshoe was taken into custody by CPS on the early morning of July 2, and released a short time later. Four days later, Crowshoe’s family reported him missing.

It’s believed he was last seen on the evening of July 3, as he left a friend’s home in Abbeydale. His body was found in a nearby drainage pond on July 24, and police determined he had been murdered.

“What happened to Colton could happen to anyone,” said Colton’s aunt, Tanya Crowshoe. “We’re not going to stop until we find out what happened”...

Crowshoe grew up in the Piikani nation, 220 km south of Calgary... Described by friends a non-violent young man who didn’t lead a criminal lifestyle, Colton was remembered as ambitious, working on becoming a welder.

If his last know contact is unwilling to discuss anything with the family as well as First Nations Police Force that raises a huge red flag doesn't it? (referring to the original missing flyer)

While Colton's family claims systemic racism within Calgary police prevented authorities from taking reports of his disappearance seriously, Danielle says their relationship with investigators have strengthened over the past year.

"The detectives that are working on the homicide case, they've gained our trust," she said. "Even the beat cops, a few of them have actually approached the family and apologized on behalf of other members, telling us that they're not all alike."

Jimmy Crowshoe carefully made his way down a grassy embankment wet with rain and quietly watched as divers scoured a northeast Calgary retention pond Monday morning in search of additional evidence in his son’s death...

While police were tight-lipped about what they were specifically looking for and what prompted the search more than a year after Colton James Crowshoe’s death, on a rainy day when divers would be challenged by weather conditions, family of the 18-year-old remained hopeful investigators were getting closer to solving the case.

''Guided by landmark report, Calgary police create missing Indigenous persons team

The Calgary Police Service has hired an Indigenous investigator who is expected to be joined by a social worker with a similar cultural background

Taking a page out of a landmark report on missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, Calgary police are creating a culturally-sensitive missing persons unit.

In what’s probably a first in Canada, the CPS has hired an Indigenous investigator who is expected to be joined by a social worker with a similar cultural background.
They’ll be part of a nine-member team tasked with solving missing persons cases, of which about 40 per cent involve Calgary’s Indigenous community, said Supt. Ryan Ayliffe.''

“After Colton Crowshoe, we created a checklist called MPQ1 which made sure critical taskings had been completed and could be tracked as a file moved through so nothing would be missed,” said Ayliffe.

“After digesting MMIWG, we began dialogue with our Indigenous communities and we realized that MPQ1 was at times a barrier to collecting information on missing people from Indigenous communities.”
