Thomas Reagan Nelson's sister called police Wednesday morning concerned she couldn't reach her brother. During a welfare check, police found Nelson dead in his apartment at the Park Residence Complex.

Neighbor Mike Breedlove said Nelson was extremely cordial. He said he would often see him walking his Shih Tzu. He also knew Nelson was very sick from multiple forms of cancer. "We had heard in the last week that he was being admitted to hospice"...

Nelson's 2001 black BMW 530I has been missing, investigators say, since Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Different neighbors have given investigators conflicting timelines of when they think the car went missing.

Thomas Reagan Nelson was a man known for his generosity — especially toward the local homeless population. Now one of the people he was trying to help has been charged with his murder.

Found dead in his first-floor Hendersonville apartment Wednesday morning, 57-year-old Nelson — known as “Reagan” by his friends — suffered from three types of cancer and seizures and was in constant pain, according to his friend, Julie Grant...

Grant said that just before he was killed, Nelson had purchased the 2001 BMW 530I that was missing from his apartment when officers found his lifeless body on Wednesday. Grant said Nelson had called her just before his death, excited about the new car and — after a long stint of being unable to drive due to medical issues — getting his license back.

“He was so happy about being able to drive again,” Grant said. “He was going to go home and stay with his family in the south,” she said, referring to relatives in Mississippi and Louisiana. After that, Nelson planned to head west, Grant said. “He was about to move to New Mexico where there’s a drier climate and better for the one remaining lung he had,” she said.

Jeez, this is so miserable, on so many levels.

How horrible! As if this man hadn't suffered enough, his last months or however long he had were brutally taken away from him. I don't know how people can be so cruel to others.

This past March, Aaron McArthur pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and larceny of a motor vehicle.

A homeless man pleaded guilty to murdering a Hendersonville resident stricken with cancer on Monday, according to Henderson County District Attorney Greg Newman.

Aaron McArthur, 33, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 19 years in prison for killing Thomas Reagan Nelson, 57.

Thaddeus Capps, who lived next door to Nelson, told News 13 the punishment didn't fit the crime against his longtime friend.

"Grand theft larceny and murder shouldn't have a 19-year sentence," Capps said.
