It's been exactly six months, six long, painful months since family and friends lost Vanessa Milligan and her unborn child in a fire and still, they have very few answers...

While her family patiently waits for answers, they gathered in peaceful protest outside the Rensselaer County Courthouse to make sure their case stays relevant...

Officials said dealing with fire makes the investigation much more complicated because a lot of evidence has been destroyed. "When you talk about dousing thousands of gallons of water on top of a crime scene, and the fire that destroyed the crime scene, it makes it more difficult to investigate, to sift through everything,” Laquidara said.

Even though police are saying they're absolutely certain that Vanessa Milligan was deliberately killed, they're stopping short of saying whether she died before or during the fire that consumed her Fifth Avenue apartment.

Police ruled that the fire that killed 19-year-old Vanessa Milligan was set intentionally. Milligan was only days away from giving birth when she was killed in the April 3 fire...

Milligan’s family, including her father Nathan, spoke at the Missing Link Church in Troy Wednesday evening about their frustrations with the investigation. They said they have their suspicions as to who is responsible.

“I believe it was done because my daughter was pregnant by a certain individual and because of that circumstance, it changed his life and because he felt like this was the only alternative,” Nathan said.

How heartbreaking. What a beautiful young lady. And her baby was fully ready to be born. So devastating. I know nothing about the case, but obviously, my mind goes to the same place as her folks. Where was the father of the baby at the time of the fire? Hate to be stereotyping, but it is so often true, sadly.

RIP Vanessa and child. :rose: :rose:

Wow. Horrible story. Beautiful girl. Days away from birth. Absolutely tragic. Hope they piece together a strong case against who did it.

Too bad the newspaper requires a subscription to read online. It sounds like they have a suspect but the story is cut short. I hope no one gets away with murder.

I'm from this area and know people who know this family. I was just reading that Vega blew kisses at the family and smiled as he was arrested. Just sick.

Also, the subject of this thread should read NY and not PA. Troy is in upstate NY. (Unless PA stands for something else)

Vanessa lost her grandmother just a day before her own death.

To understand Vanessa's upbringing is to understand the pain she was felling on the day she died. Ever since she was a little girl, Vanessa was raised by her grandmother, Marilyn Houser. The day before the fire, Marilyn passed away.

Thank you Okiegranny for starting this thread.

Thank goodness for that. He doesn't deserve to be out ever.

Gabriel "Gabe" Vega told police he didn't kill an ex-girlfriend who was pregnant with his daughter. He was too busy smoking pot and playing video games on April 3 when Vanessa Milligan died...

In a deposition, Becker and Detective Sgt. Michael Parrow alleged Vega was brought in for interviews three times — twice in April and once in June — during the six-month investigation before the case was presented to a grand jury.

"When asked about the unborn baby possibly being his, he (Vega) indicated that he wasn't sure if the baby was his or not, but supposed it could be," Becker wrote. "We asked him about information circulating that he wanted her to have an abortion. Gabe told us that he never told anyone he wanted an abortion." Vega admitted he had a child with another woman but denied dating the two women at the same time.

Three telephone calls between Gabriel "Gabe" Vega and his girlfriend in 2015 are in dispute Monday at Vega's Rensselaer County Court trial...

Botts said the calls were made in June and November 2015 by Vega to his mother, who then routed the call to Kim Virola, Vega's girlfriend...

Rench objected to the introduction of the calls and said the defense needs time to translate the Spanish recordings made by the jail staff. Botts said Troy police officers have translated the calls and provided transcripts to the defense.

From June:

http://cbs6albany.com/news/local/ju...ty-of-manslaughter-arson-and-abortion-charges

A jury of six men and six women found Gabriel Vega guilty of manslaughter, arson and abortion in the death of Vanessa Milligan but not guilty of murder...

Prosecutors are preparing to ask for the stiffest sentence allowed under the law. "The manslaughter conviction carries a maximum penalty of 25 years, the arson he can get 25 years," District Attorney Joel Abelove said.

Abelove said the abortion conviction can carry a penalty of up to seven years. He says prosecutors will look to see if Vega can serve the sentences for each of those charges consecutively.
