Daughter dead, mom missing, questions remain

Authorities said they are now turning their focus on the missing 68-year-old mother, Nena Metoyer, of Dunedin, Florida, who had been been staying with her daughter in Fowler. She is described as being 5-feet 1-inch tall, 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. They said she sometimes wears glasses.

Police said Metoyer’s vehicle was still at the residence, but her whereabouts are unknown. She had been staying at the Fowler residence since Aug. 5. Family said they have not spoken to Metoyer for about two weeks.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fowler Police Department at 765-884-0080.

Fowler police searching for missing 68-year-old woman

Fowler police have a mystery on their hands in the case of a missing grandmother, Nena Metoyer, who came to the small Indiana hamlet in August to be with her ailing 49-year-old daughter, Teresa Jarding.

Jarding's children asked police to check in on their mother and grandmother Wednesday evening, but police didn't see anything out of place at the house in the 500 block of East Fifth Street and no one came to the door, Chief Dennis Rice said. At 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, the children met police at the house. The ailing mother was seen sitting in the dark in a recliner, so police forced open the door.

Missing woman, missing man: Mystery in Fowler

The search in Fowler for a missing woman perhaps has a connection to a missing Chicago man who might be Nena Metoyer's former son-in-law, Chief Dennis Rice of the Fowler Police Department said Wednesday.

Authorities have been looking since last week for Metoyer, 68, who came to Fowler in early August to be with her ailing daughter, Teresa Jarding, 49.

Several days before Jarding was found unresponsive late Sept. 24 in a recliner inside her home on East Fifth Street, Fowler police received a visit from a sister of Milan Lekich of Chicago, Rice said.

Missing Chicago man connected to Fowler missing person case

In my career of having worked a lot of different cases, I’ve never worked one quite like this before,” said Fowler Police Chief Dennis Rice.

Rice spent the day Tuesday combing through information in the missing person case of 68-year-old Nina Metoyer. It’s a case he said leaves more questions than answers.

“There’s no indication she was abducted, just that she’s not there anymore and we don’t have all the answers,” said Rice.

Fowler police: Missing woman last seen in August

Nena Metoyer in August boarded a plane in Florida for Indiana, and as best as anyone can recall, it was the last time anyone saw her, according Fowler police Chief Dennis Rice.

The missing person's case has baffled Rice's department for more than a week as investigators try to decipher Metoyer's whereabouts.

"The last time anyone can say they saw her was Aug. 5," Rice said.

Police concluded that Metoyer, 68, was with her daughter, Teresa Jarding, in Fowler as recently as two weeks before Jarding died on Sept. 25. That's based on a phone conversation Jarding had with her aunt, Metoyer's sister, in Florida.

Police investigate 'very odd' disappearance of husband, mother of dead woman

It's a mystery that has led police to dead ends in three states.

First, a man disappears from the Southeast Side of Chicago a year and a half ago and gets married in Las Vegas. Then last month, the wife is discovered dying in her Indiana home. And both the husband and the woman's mother are nowhere to be found.

"It is very odd," said Dennis Rice, police chief of Fowler, Ind., about 100 miles from Chicago. "I’ve never seen anything like this."

Police have a lot of questions but so far no evidence of foul play.

Dismembered body tentatively ID'd as man missing from Hegewisch

Dismembered remains found on the Southeast Side over the weekend appear to be the body of a man reported missing more than a year ago, but it's unclear whether his death is connected to the disappearance of his mother-in-law in Indiana last month, officials said Monday.

The body has been tentatively identified as Milan Lekich, 51. It was found wrapped in sheets or blankets and placed in a garbage can inside the garage of the Hegewisch home where Lekich had lived in the 13300 block of Avenue M, according to sources with knowledge of the investigation.

The dismembered body found in a garage on Chicago’s south side is that of Milan Lekich. A spokesman with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the ID Tuesday. Lekich died from multiple gun shot wounds to the head and the death is being ruled a homicide.

On Oct. 5, Chicago police were called to the home after neighbors reported smelling a foul odor. They found a man’s body in the garage, wrapped in plastic.

As News 18 has previously reported, Fowler police believe that the death of Lekich is possibly linked to an ongoing investigation in Fowler.
