A recent parolee with a long criminal history has been charged with the 2002 cold case murder of a woman in south suburban Bedford Park.

Steven Podkulski, 40, was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder for the death of 27-year-old Jennifer Boyd, according to court records. He was ordered held on a $3 million bond Thursday.

Boyd, who worked as a manager at the Public Storage facility at 6990 W. 79th St. in Bedford Park, was stabbed repeatedly and left to bleed to death inside a locker at the facility on Aug. 3, 2002, the SouthtownStar reported at the time. Her death was the first recorded murder ever in the village.

Smuskiewicz and his partner David Westin reopened the case in 2012 and really went at it "hot and heavy for the past eight to 10 months," he said. He said they reinterviewed witnesses, re-examined evidence and developed some new information and witnesses that eventually led them to Podkulski. "We talked with the right people," Smuskiewicz said...

According to reports at the time, someone in the facility heard banging and calls for help and notified authorities. By the time the Bedford Park Fire Department broke into the locker, Boyd was dead. "She was not alive when she was discovered," Smuskiewicz said.

Smuskiewicz did not rule out robbery as a motive for the crime but said he doubted it was the case. "If it was a robbery, they would not have moved her from the office," he said.
