Bashara's children tell of *advertiser censored*, jail house call

Detroit — Robert Bashara's two children spent all day on the witness stand Thursday describing a father who surfed pornographic websites with his family in the same room, cheated on their mother and faked crying in public after she was murdered.

The Bashara children were the only witnesses Thursday, the sixth day of testimony in the highly publicized murder-for-hire trial.

Bashara stared at daughter Jessica and son Robert when they were on the witness stand, but both avoided eye contact with their father.

Testimony Day 7: Bob Bashara Trial

Monday October 27, 2014

Amy Lange:
Good morning!!! Hope everybody had a great weekend! We are just getting settled in here - photographers setting up, detectives bringing in boxes of evidence in brown bags, attorneys starting to file in. This is the third week of testimony and the prosecution has more than 80 witnesses on their witness list - we've been through 20-some so I'm told the judge has told the attorneys it's time to pick up the pace. I'm told a number of witnesses could be called this week - from a furniture store owner Bashara tried to pay to hire a hitman to kill Joseph Gentz to a former tenant of Bashara's to the sister and mother of Jane Bashara. There are also a number of witnesses who were here last week but were not called yet so it's unclear who is going when - will let you know as soon as the first witness takes the stand!

Bashara is in the courtroom now

Good morning!!! Hope everybody had a great weekend! There are also a number of witnesses who were here last week but were not called yet so it's unclear who is going when - will let you know as soon as the first witness takes the stand!

Edward Fahner is the first witness

He is employed at Steve's Furniture and Appliances

On Warren and Chalmers in Detroit - he's been there about 15 years - he knows Bob as a customer - they sell appliances to him for his rental properties.

He knows Steve Tibado - that's his boss.
Eddie is very nervous - says he's a little dizzy from his medication - he has some blood pressure issues and was recently released from the hospital.

In 2011 - Bob owed $504 dollars for some appliances.
January 2012 Eddie found out about Jane and gave a statement to the police around February 7, 2012 at Steve's Furniture

Detectives came down and took a statement from Eddie and from Steve. Then February 29th they gave another statement.
Then Bashara came into the business

He came in through the back door - big pounding noise on the back door - like he was pounding with his first - very loud. Bashara had never pounded on the door like that before.

Bob said - Ed can you belief what they're accusing me of doing?
Ed was shocked - couldn't believe Bob was there.
Bob said - Gentz must have come looking for some money.

Pros Lisa Lindsey is going to show him his statement to refresh his memory.

Bashara said I hope Steve didn't throw me under the boss. Cuz I wouldn't do that to him.

That was the same day Steve had given another statement to police.

Police had picked Steve up to take him for the interview.

Back in 2012 - Eddie had met Joe Gentz about eight years prior. Joe had worked at Steve's furniture years ago - only worked there about two weeks.

After Eddie's encounter with Bob he gave another statement.
This poor witness is so uncomfortable.

March 1st he makes another statement.

After that Bashara came back to Steve's Furniture about eight times - Steve was not there

May 23rd Eddie gives another statement.

Two weeks prior to the statement Bob had come back looking for Steve. Then in June Bob came back again looking for Steve

Lillian Diallo is doing the cross examination - asking about Bashara coming to the back door - it wasn't unusual for him to come to the back door - which wasn't locked.

Bob told him - Joe Gentz came to my house and asked for money - I guess my wife must have told him to get out.
Then Bob started talking about a bad refrigerator that needed to be tended to

Eddie asked him where is the $504 that you owe?
Lillian wants to know how many times police came to Steve's furniture in February and March - he thinks about four times

Eddie says he usually did the negotiations with Bob for the purchase of appliances then cleared that with Steve.
But Diallo reading from a transcript where he talks about Bob talking to Steve.

The only bad experience you've had with Bob Bashara is him not paying is that correct?
Yes

Steve and Bob are NOT friends correct?
That's correct.

Bob did not tell Eddie that Joe Gentz killed his wife.

Bob did say he hoped Steve did not throw him under the bus.

Lisa Lindsey - did the way Bob banged on the back door cause you some alarm?
Yes
Did you indicate it shocked you?
Yes

Liliian - at the time police come to you it was about Bob Bashara and the murder of his wife and they questioned you alot?
Yes.
They are done with this witness

10:26 Amy Lange:
Next witness is Steve.

Steven Tibaudo is 56 - owns the furniture and appliance store - does appliance repair and owns some rental properties. He's had Steve's Furniture since 1996. Eddie has been an employee of his for a long period of time

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B09dsYtCYAEr1vN.jpg (picture of Steve Tibaudo)

Bob stopped in 12 years ago because he needed a refrigerator for the rental property above the Hard Luck Bar on Mack

Bob would come maybe twice a year or call for repairs - sometimes you'd see Bob sometimes you wouldn't see him.. Steve ran into him a few times at the Hard Luck. Bob was there entertaining friends. Steve only had a professional relationship with him. They are acquaintances

In August 2011 - Steve says Bob stopped in one day - Bob was standing over him as he sat at his desk -Bob said can we talk in private? Kept staring at the corners - in the room - where security cameras were in Steve's Furniture

Steve said - this is private here, Bob - what do you need?

Bob insisted they talk in private - wanted to go outside

They go out to the alley - Bob puts his hands on Steve's shoulders - pressing down on them - looking right at him and says, "Can I trust you?"
Ya Bob - what do you need?

They repeat that - then a third time - Bob is pressing harder "Can I REALLY trust you?"
Ya Bob - what do you need?
He says - I got this GP tenant making my life miserable Asks Steve if he knew anybody you could run her over or T-bone her? (hit her with a car)
Steve says the hair on the back of his neck stood up.
Bob had said - she's making my life hell.

Steve said - I got two cop buddies who will handle this for you.
Bob pushed him away real hard and said, "What are you ****ing crazy?" And left

In the fall of 2011 - Steve got a call from his friend Roy - a guy he had met at a party store - Roy had a little terrier dog.
Steve is now crying because he had a little dog too

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B09hV_aIYAA6Ir7.jpg (<< picture of Steve emotional about dog)

They are handing him a kleenex - Steve is really broken up because he had to put his little dog down,.

Now taking a ten minute recess. ((Amy Lange: Side note I have a little dog too so I feel for poor Steve - he was very emotional.)

Wow, this is the most emotion shown during this whole trial - a parenthetical mention of his little dog. Judge called for 10-minute break.

Amy Lange:

Back to how Steve met Roy Lawson at the party store down the street - they both had terriers. Steve says Roy has a Southern drawl - he liked his accent. Roy gave Steve leashes and kennels for his dogs. Steve would help him with stuff. At some point Roy called Steve and said he had a friend who needed a job. Steve said he didn't have any job openings. Roy said - maybe you could buy some of his furniture. Steve said okay - then just forgot about it.

Then Roy showed up at his house and came through the garage and knocked on the door - Steve says - come on in Roy. Roy had somebody with him. Steve recognized him as Joe Gentz. Steve had seen Joe Gentz before because Gentz worked for him for a short time. He worked for Steve's wife's cousin Pizzeria.

Roy said Joe was being evicted - at the time time was living at Eagle Point apartments on Jefferson in between 10 and 11 mile roads. Steve said he might know the guy who owns the building so let me talk to him for you. Joe was under a lot of stress having a hernia operation. Steve was concerned about Joe because Roy asked him to help him out.

Steve called Bob because he thought Bob owned the building to try to get Joe a few extra days and help Joe move. Steve called Bob he said he doesn't own those apartments. Steve told him what was going on. Said - I know you own some buildings - maybe this guy would be a good handyman for you - big guy - can help you move stuff and he does plumbing.

Joe came by a week or so later - Joe thanked him for hooking him up with Bob

Steve says they helped move Joe's furniture to Roy's house and put it outside and covered it with a tarp

Pros now showing phone records - conversations between Joe and Steve and Steve and Bob

That was the last time he saw Joe for a while. January 2012 - Steve learns about Jane's murder. He walked into his store and Eddie told him.

GPP Police called the Furniture store and Steve called back.

He was also contacted by investigators from Wayne Co Pros Office, DPD Homicide

In June 2012 - Bob was calling the store but Steve didn't talk to him.

Instead he called the WCPO

After the murder “Bob was calling my store, but I didn’t talk to him. I called Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.” Calls from Feb. to June

Amy Lange:

In June 2012 - Bob was calling the store but Steve didn't talk to him.

Instead he called the WCPO

At the time, Steve was having stomach issues and feared for his life. He was hospitalized. April 2012 he went for heart surgery.
He wasn't at Steve's Furniture as much.

From Feb to June Bob called 30 or 40 times for Steve and came to the store. Steve feared for his safety.

Steve called Pros office investigators and asked them to come along so he could talk to Bob - he feared for his safety
