Ten minutes after a wounded father struggled to revive his dying son, his accused killer walked into the lobby of the state police station and turned himself in to authorities.

Three state police officers revealed those details Friday during a felony hearing in Bainbridge Town Court for John Guzy, who they say fatally shot a 26-year-old Afton man (Derek D. Prindle) Monday in a fit of road rage.

District Attorney Joseph McBride opened the John Guzy murder trial Monday by telling a judge how a normal trip to get rid of recyclables ended with tragedy...

During a 45-minute opening statement in Chenango County Court, McBride recounted how Guzy never identified himself as a retired police officer during a confrontation outside a Bainbridge fitness center after a road rage incident.

Armed with a .25-caliber Beretta and intoxicated, Guzy fatally shot Derek D. Prindle and wounded his father, McBride said. Both victims were unarmed, he said.

On Monday morning, more than 30 people sat in on sentencing for Guzy in Chenango County Court. Armed guards stood watch outside as the Judge delivered his decision. Guzy was given 25 years to life for murder and another 15 year for attempted murder...

Guzy's past wasn't allowed to be brought up during the three-day trial in April. Now that the sentencing is over, new details were released about Guzy's history of violent behavior. "About four months prior to this incident, the defendant was driving down route 17 where he is alleged to have done the exact same conduct he did in this case,” said Chenango County District Attorney Joseph McBride.

McBride says that day police found the same .25 caliber handgun that Guzy used to kill Derek Prindle, Jr. Guzy would plead guilty to disorderly conduct--which is only a violation.
