U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard has volunteered - and been called up by - the Hawaii Army National Guard in response to the emergency situation caused by the Big Island, Kilauea Volcano eruptions, whose lava flow has caused evacuations and imminent danger to residences.

Sadly, despite the intense media interest generated by a congresswoman serving as a Military Police captain, Gabbard won't be able to help. Like the rest of the 80 Guard soldiers and airmen already on the ground in the area, she'll be subject to the military rules that forbid interviews or statements with or to the media. How long she will serve isn't known at this time. Gabbard will be working out of the command center near Pahoa, where Humvee 'presence patrols' are being conducted.

Today is election day but luckily Gabbard is expected to win an easy victory over her Republican rival Kawika Crowley anyhow.

Just as an aside, has anyone noticed the number of pictures out there of people in Hawaii standing right beside - or even ON TOP - of the crusted but glowing lava flows? Are they made of asbestos or what?

Further aside; the subheading of the article I linked calls Gabbard a congressman. She's not. I have tipped them off to the typo. :)
