Big Bank Hank, an Early Star of Rap, Dies at 58 (NYT)

Big Bank Hank, one-third of the Sugarhill Gang, the unlikely ambassadors who took hip-hop out of Bronx parks and onto the pop charts, died on Tuesday in Englewood, N.J. He was 58.

The cause was complications of cancer, said David Mallie, business manager for the two other members of the Sugarhill Gang, Wonder Mike and Master Gee.

The Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” was not the first commercially released hip-hop single, but it was the one that effectively birthed the genre as a commercial force.

Big Bank Hank was born Henry Lee Jackson in the Bronx on Jan. 11, 1956.

Damn. That sucks.

"I'm here an I'm there, I'm Big Bank Hank, I'm everywhere."

Now you're in Heaven. Rest easy Hank. Englewood lost a true musical pioneer. RIP.

"check it out, I'm the c-a-s-an-the-o-v-a and the rest is f-l-y"...

Rap on Big Bank Hank....

Living out on the east end of LI getting WBLS and the other early rap & hip hop stations at that time led my older brother to make his first rap album purchase... "Rapper's Delight". I'll never forget the Sugarhill Gang graphics on that album cover!

RIP BBH!!!

So young, so assured, so innocent, so happy. Great performances, great song -- true sentiment, not sentimentality.

Thanks. The world's a better place for that. Rest in peace BBH.
