CA - Brittany Weatherbee, 19, Tries to Kill her Dad Michael Mattson, 35. Redding.

Redding police Sunday were searching for a 19-year-old Redding woman who allegedly shot her father in the chest and then drove off.

Brittany Weatherbee was being sought for suspicion of attempted murder in the 11:25 p.m. Saturday shooting of her father, Michael Mattson, in the 3600 block of Churn Creek Road, Redding....

Authorities say Weatherbee should be considered armed and dangerous.

A Redding teenager accused of trying to kill her stepfather told investigators he abused her mother and siblings all her life and feared she herself would be hurt by him when she shot him...

Weatherbee reportedly told Harris she yelled for Mattson to leave her family alone, and then he allegedly approached her car with a knife in his hand. She grabbed the gun from the center console and pulled the trigger, then left without being sure she had actually hit Mattson...

Weatherbee told investigators she dropped the gun into the Sacramento River from the Cypress Bridge, then hid out for the evening before turning herself in the next day.

In a news release issued Tuesday by the District Attorney’s Office, it noted the charges against Weatherbee were dropped after it reviewed the evidence collected by Redding police and after it analyzed the stepfather’s criminal background and the family’s domestic violence history.

Stepfather Michael Mattson, 35, of Shasta Lake was convicted in 1997 of two separate charges against Brittany Weatherbee’s mother, the DA’s office said, adding that Mattson ultimately went to prison “multiple times” for separate felony domestic violence convictions.

Furthermore, the office said, Brittany Weatherbee was a witness to the violence inflicted by Mattson upon her mother and siblings.
