"Mystery tip-off could be breakthrough in 18-year cold case of missing teenage girl"

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/missing-ciara-breen-tip-could-6277401

A mystery tip-off has sparked a new search for a 17-year-old girl who vanished nearly two decades ago.

Police sub aqua teams and forensic specialists are combing areas of bogland in the hunt for Ciara Breen who disappeared in 1997.

The search will resume this morning and officers investigating the case are now working on finding anything that might lead to a breakthrough to give her family the answers they need.

One theory being probed is that Ciara died a violent death and her body was dumped in the marshland.

Gardaí say it is too early to tell if remains found in Louth are those of missing Ciara Breen.

The 17-year-old disappeared in February 1997.

A house in Dundalk remains sealed off after skeletal remains were found at the rear of a property on Mary Street North while building work was underway yesterday.
A forensic anthropologist confirmed last night that the remains are human.

The discovery in the back garden of a house are close to where Ciara Breen was last seen.

On the night the 17-year-old vanished she told her mother she was going to bed but then sneaked out of the house.
Ciara lived on Bachelor’s Walk which is less than 200 metres away.

Remains found are "Historical" and at least 70 years old
The two storey, mid terrace house was cordoned off and speculation centred on whether the remains were those of Dundalk teenager, Ciara Breen, who went missing in 1997 aged 17 from the home she shared with her mum, Bernadette, at nearby Bachelor's Walk. But within hours, Gardai, using the services of a forensic anthropologist, were able to state publicly the skeleton was 'historic'.

The spokesman said: 'Gardai in Dundalk have completed the preliminary examination with the assistance of a forensic anthropologist and the State Pathologist who have confirmed that these human remains are historic. These remains are not connected to any ongoing Garda investigation'.

Mother of missing teenager Ciara Breen dies

The mother of missing teenager Ciara Breen (17) has died without ever getting her daughter’s remains returned to her.

Tributes have been paid to Bernadette Breen by people who worked with her and by the senior gardaí who led the searches for Ciara, who was her only child.

Ciara left the terraced home she and her mother shared in Dundalk in February 1997 to meet someone. She never made it home.

On Thursday, retired detective inspector Pat Marry, who once led the investigation, said: “I would have loved to have been able to bring Ciara home to Bernadette so she could have buried her only child and to give Bernadette peace of mind.”

Author probes case of missing Ciara Breen

The case of missing Dundalk woman, Ciara Breen, who disappeared from her home in 1997, is featured in a new audio book 'The Vanishing Triangle.'

Author Claire McGowan, best known for her crime fiction books, has turned her focus to the disappearance of eight women in the 1990s, all within an eighty mile radius of Dublin.

In 2015, Liam Mullen, a man in his 50s was arrested but released without charge. He was later arrested a second time based on sightings of him with Ciara on the night of her disappearance and comments he made regarding her being in a local bog in the years since her disappearance.
Attempts to search the bog were hampered by further dumping in the area, with tons of new debris being added that lead forensic anthropologists excavating the site to state that it was unlikely she could ever be located even if she were in there. Though the bog covers seventeen acres, funding only allowed for them to search about two acres. They selected the section to be searched based on sightings from other people and felt they might be close to finding her, but ultimately came up empty handed.
Mullen, the prime suspect, died of a suspected overdose while in custody in 2017. Though he can no longer be brought to justice, it is still widely believed that he is responsible for young Ciara Breen’s death and may be the only person who could have let authorities to the body.

Back in 1999: Missing Ciara probe highlights teen exploitation
CIARA BREEN planned to return home after sneaking out of the house while her mum slept. It now appears she did not go very far from the terraced home they shared on Bachelors Walk in the centre of Dundalk.

Within days of her disappearance in February 1997, local detectives had a prime suspect but it took over two years of painstaking work, gathering evidence and pinpointing inconsistencies in his statements that resulted in his arrest last Friday.

The 34-year-old was allegedly seen with the 17-year-old on one occasion a few days before she vanished. When first interviewed by detectives he denied ever knowing her. It is believed that an admission the suspect made to a third party led to his arrest.

The suspect is known for trying to keep company with teenage girls and boys. One source said he was known for giving drink to them and then trying to have sex with them.

By all accounts Ciara knew her killer because he lived in the area. There is no evidence and very little support amongst the investigation team to suggest that he was involved in the disappearances of five other women in the Leinster area in recent years.

There is no proof Ciara is part of the Vanishing Triangle, but then again, how could anybody know for sure?
