"No one has any idea why this happened," the relative told the Courier-Post Tuesday. "I've got no information. I have no answer to why. I can't even conceive of a why"...

According to the relative, Joyce Sheridan, 69, was stabbed at least eight times in an attack described as "savage and done with rage."

Her husband of nearly 50 years, Cooper University Hospital CEO John Sheridan, had "tentative" stab wounds on his left side, the family member said... Sheridan, 72, also had a penetrating wound to his neck that may have nicked the jugular, said the family member. That weapon has not been identified or recovered. The husband's body was found beneath a "huge armoire" that had been doused with gasoline and set afire, the relative added.

The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office is "very confident that the four sons of John and Joyce Sheridan played no role in the death of their mother and father," according to Prosecutor Geoffrey D. Soriano.

A month-and-a-half after the deaths of Cooper Health Systems CEO John Sheridan, 72, and his wife Joyce Sheridan, 69, in a suspicious house fire, it was recently discovered that neither one had any type of will.

A process has been started in Somerset County probate court to divide up the Sheridans’ assets despite the absence of a will. Paperwork for this process was filed on Nov. 13...

The Sheridans’ son, Matthew Sheridan, was arrested for cocaine possession on the day they died, but authorities have said the arrest is irrelevant, Philly.com reported.

New Jersey's attorney general is conducting his own shadow investigation into the shocking September deaths of a politically connected hospital CEO and his wife...

Acting Attorney General John Hoffman, said one person briefed on the case, has deployed a team from the State Police and state Division of Criminal Justice that is "providing a fresh set of eyes, additional manpower and expertise. This is a very complex investigation"...

John Sheridan, a former state transportation commissioner, was a pillar of the New Jersey Republican establishment, having served as an adviser to every GOP governor in recent memory, including the current holder of the post, Chris Christie.

Mitchko believes robbery is an unlikely motive. Cash was found in the bedroom and a large collection of antiques — including some from the Revolutionary War — was untouched.

Joyce Sheridan's brother said he and other members of the extended family are worried the prosecutor's office was attempting to quickly write off the case as a murder/suicide carried out by John Sheridan, but there are too many unanswered questions to draw that conclusion...

"The prosecutor is waiting for a toxicology report about some drugs John was taking," Mitchko added. "They want to hang their hat on that as an explanation, to tie the drugs into a rage attack on her or something."

wait. The theory bantered about is murder/suicide? Cuz he can kill her and stab himself in the jugular AND THEN pull the huge armoire on top of himself AND THEN douse it in gas and light it. Ummm, ok. Truth is stranger than fiction, I guess.

TO ME, however, this screams personal and intimate AND NOT MURDER/SUICIDE. Interesting to see what is discovered after investigation.

I think it's worth mentioning that one of the sons was said to have been in NY at the time of the murders. It was reported that he was arrested that afternoon for cocaine possession and that the arrest was unrelated to the murders. HOWEVER, the Montgomery Twp. police report has the arrest occurring at 6:13 a.m., which is within minutes of the neighbor calling 911. No drug charges have been filed, by the way.

Two months after the violent deaths of John and Joyce Sheridan, there are few answers in the mysterious and perplexing end of a couple connected to the state's politically powerful... the investigation into the deaths has largely been shrouded in secrecy...

Joyce Sheridan's brother, Peter Mitchko, remains in pursuit of answers about her killing, which Mitchko said was described as "savage." Her death has been ruled a homicide, according to a death certificate The Inquirer obtained this week. The cause of death on John Sheridan's death certificate was "pending investigation."

The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office has not publicly released the cause or manner of the Sheridans' deaths, continually citing the ongoing investigation. The Attorney General's Office said that because of the complexity of the case, it had recently deployed a team of lawyers, investigators, and state police detectives to assist in the probe.

Interesting info about the son. Something's odd. Jmo

Somerset County officials said they still don't have a medical examiner's report or toxicology report in the mysterious deaths of John and Joyce Sheridan.

It's been more than two months since the politically-connected CEO of Cooper Health System and his wife died Sept. 28. Though there was a fire at their home, authorities have yet to say how the two died — as well as whether the case is considered a dual homicide, a murder-suicide or some other situation.

Investigators, two sources with knowledge of the case said, initially theorized John Sheridan killed his wife before setting the bedroom on fire and taking his own life... Though it is unclear whether authorities have discovered new evidence in recent weeks, sources familiar with the case said investigators had been struggling with wounds on John Sheridan caused by a weapon or weapons they could not find among the rubble...

John Sheridan, whose manner of death is listed as "pending investigation" on his death certificate, had multiple wounds, including one on his neck that nicked his jugular vein and that apparently was caused by a weapon with a rounded edge...

Mitchko said he was told that in addition to a steak knife used on Joyce Sheridan, a serrated bread knife was found at the scene. Neither of those knives caused John Sheridan's wounds, two sources familiar with the investigation said.

thanks Okie Granny!

I can't say I expected murder/suicide but haven't followed this thread a lot. need to go back and read thru it again.

ETA...obviously I haven't followed this closely enough as the article at the beginning of the thread alludes to murder/suicide. Too many threads to keep track of I guess!

What an interesting case. I do wonder that the lady's brother was so bothered by the ME/LE doing the tox screen on his brother-in-law. I would assume you would want as thorough an investigation as possible, no matter what is found. The more you know, the less guessing and arguing people have to endure later.

I am shocked that this thread has not generated any interest here. Talk about a bizarre death with an even more bizarre aftermath of "investigation". I've felt something was way off from the moment I heard about their deaths (they are right across the River from us here in Philly). Wish there would be some sleuther input!

Nearly five months after the couple's deaths, authorities disclosed Joyce Sheridan's cause of death, but a final determination of the cause and manner of death for her husband has not been issued by the New Jersey Office of the State Medical Examiner...

Mark Sheridan, general counsel for the New Jersey Republican State Committee, is the administrator for his parents' estate, with an estimated value of $2 million. A will has not been located, according to a lawyer hired by the family to assist with the estate.

Agreed. And furthermore, why hasn't it received more attention from LE?? Today the news says, open and shut? LE is essentially saying the wife murdered the husband, because how else could he be under an armoire doused with gasoline then set on fire? And the wife commit suicide by stabbing herself. I'd like to see the medical records. These deaths still seem very suspicious (to me).

Millionaire CEO, 72, stabbed to death his wife, 69, then set fire to their home in murder-suicide, officials say... but their children insist they were both murdered

John Sheridan and wife, Joyce, found dead in New Jersey home last year

They had both been stabbed several times, while their house was ablaze

On Friday, prosecutors ruled Mr Sheridan, 72, stabbed to death wife, 69

Cooper Health System CEO 'then set fire to house and stabbed himself'

Couple's children have released statement challenging official findings

Four sons say they still don't know who killed parents on September 28

But prosecutors said inquiry found no signs of break-in at the property

Also said Mr Sheridan was 'withdrawn' and 'very upset' prior to deaths

An earlier article says three weapons were used but only two were recovered. Did they recover the third? If not, it can't be a murder/suicide with a missing weapon.
