Berks missing child case to be highlighted on 'The Hunt'

Nearly three years ago, Guy Markus, a plant manager from Reading, went to the St. Lawrence apartment of his estranged girlfriend to pick up their 2-year-old son, Daniel, over whom they were waging a custody battle, and found the apartment empty, with a note posted on the door: “When I get legal help, I will contact you.”

Markus hasn't seen his son since.His former girlfriend, Maria Evelia Cabrera-Gutierrez, now 46, fled with the boy to a bus terminal in Reading, taking a bus to Texas, according to authorities. Their whereabouts are unknown, but the case is getting renewed interested from the host of a popular TV show.The case will be featured on HLN's “The Hunt with John Walsh” at 8 p.m. Sunday, and Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers is seeking tips on the boy's whereabouts in coordination with the broadcast.Guy Markus hopes the show will bring leads to Daniel's whereabouts.

Maria Evelia Cabrera-Gutierrez, the mother of Daniel Markus, was taken into custody just 24 hours after her case was profiled on the CNN show The Hunt with John Walsh.

The show, which aired on September 17 on CNN sister channel HLN, chronicled Guy Markus's quest to reunite with his son, who was allegedly kidnapped by Cabrera-Gutierrez, now 46, on November 13, 2014 in Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Mother accused of abducting son captured after case aired on 'The Hunt'

On Monday, Maria Cabrera-Gutierrez was arrested in Raymond, Washington, said Michael Harpster, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Philadelphia Division.

Tips to the show's hotline helped authorities locate Cabrera after the episode aired Sunday night, according to the FBI.
She admitted her identity after being taken into custody by the Pacific County Sheriff's Department and the Raymond Police Department, according to Carrie Adamowski, a spokeswoman for the FBI's Philadelphia Division.

Raymond Police found her son, 4-year-old Daniel Markus, at a local school. Daniel will remain in Washington State Child Protective Services until his father can take him home to Pennsylvania, according to an FBI press release.

She gave him the new name after fleeing Reading with him and his older brother in 2014, taking a bus to San Antonio, then getting a ride from a nephew to nearby Austin, Texas, where they stayed at a hotel and a shelter before traveling to Seattle, authorities said.In Seattle, she introduced herself at an agency that helps victims of domestic violence as a woman escaping an abusive relationship, though "we do not believe that was the case whatsoever," said Detective Deron Manndel, an investigator with the Central Berks Regional Police who, along with the FBI, has sought her since she and Daniel left her St. Lawrence apartment Nov. 13, 2014.

Through victims advocates, she found an apartment with another woman in Raymond, Wash., a once-rollicking lumber town near the Pacific Ocean that's now a quiet retreat for tourists traveling the West Coast on Highway 101. Maria Evelia Cabrera-Gutierrez shortened her name to "Lia Gutierrez" and lived rent-free, babysitting or doing odd jobs for the property owner, hoping to escape a Pennsylvania court ruling that would have given Daniel's father joint custody of their son, Manndel said.

During opening arguments Monday afternoon, Assistant District Attorney told a jury that Cabrera-Gutierrez took the law into her own hands for fear of having to share custody of the boy with her former boyfriend.

Closing arguments are scheduled for today.
