"Some kid was just in this van and setting it on fire," the caller said. "He went out on the beach and is running north … We've got to get these people out around these buildings...'

A dozen 911 recordings released Tuesday are providing more details about what happened early Saturday at Carolina Beach when separate fires tore through two condominiums, killing two women and threatening the lives of others, including a family trapped inside one of the buildings. 12 condos were destroyed.

Marshall Hudson Doran, 22, of Kure Beach is charged with attempted first-degree burglary and say he is a person interest in the fires.

He was being held Tuesday on a $2.5 million bond at the New Hanover County jail.

Carolina Beach fires linked to Raleigh hit-and-run
A man charged in a fatal hit-and-run that killed two people in Wake County 10 months ago is now a person of interest in three fires

At the time of his arrest, Doran was out of jail on a $500,000 bond on charges stemming from his Feb. 13 arrest in Wake County, where the North Carolina State Highway Patrol says he killed two men on Interstate 40 near Garner.
Investigators said Doran was on his way from Kure Beach to Chapel Hill to visit his girlfriend when he allegedly swerved to avoid a truck and ended up hitting and killing Nathaniel Williams, 34, of Hope Mills, and Larry Kepley, 39, of Winston-Salem, who were on the shoulder of the highway.
Both Kepley and Williams had stopped to help a driver who wrecked in the snow and ice along the road.

Doran was out on 1/2 million dollar bond for killing 2 men in a hit & run, DUI, in February this year. I didn't understand the current charge of attempted 1st degree robbery, maybe he lighted fires to cover for that. He was seen setting fires inside autos in garages at street level with a couple stories of condos above them. At 2:30AM, most people would have been sleeping on the 2nd or 3rd floor. Fire spread quickly through the wooden structure & destroyed 12 units....He's 22 & his father said his kids were involved with him in his photography business, so that may have been his profession. One report says Doran is a college student.

The first fire was reported at 409 Carolina Beach Ave. S. at 2:28 a.m. The second fire was reported at 3:45 a.m. at 811 Carolina Beach Ave. S., and the third fire, which was a vehicle, was reported at 4:34 a.m. at 1123 S. Lake Park Blvd. Doran was arrested at 611 Carolina Beach Ave. S. at about 5 a.m. as crews battled the three fires.
“We spent yesterday going through the leftovers of the fires,” Griffin said. “As we worked through them we did have several grim discoveries. We have found two bodies. Just pray for us. Pray the community. And, I promise you, we will work hard to help you guys get through this.
“Our guys were brave. They worked hard. They had a lot of fire to deal with. I hope the community understands that our volunteers, our paid guys–they worked very diligently to control that fire.”

Doran had stolen a purse from the Tiki bar and restaurant earlier, then he attempted to break into a home and the man at home confronted him. He took off running and just a little while later started the fire at the 409 Carolina Beach Ave. South Condo building ( this is the building I lived in, on top floor). He then started fire at another condo building, burned a van and then burned a vehicle at a nearby hotel.

Good grief, lonetraveler, I didn't realize you were this close to this mess. What could that kid possibly have in his mind??

My parents-in-law had a place at Carolina Beach several years ago. They sold & re-setup their beach home at Sunset Beach when things started getting so crowded and condo's, etc., were going up all over the place at Carolina Beach. This arson business has got our attention since we all still have such affection for Carolina Beach. We all spent a lot of time at Caro. Beach, and I'm familiar with the area. And Doran is also in a lot of trouble in Raleigh, NC, due to the hit and run deaths at a different time. From the linked article:

In addition to the charges in New Hanover County, Doran faces several in Wake County, where he was arrested last February in the hit-and-run deaths of two men helping a stranded motorist on Interstate 40.

Charges in that case, including felony death by motor vehicle, hit-and-run and impaired driving, are still pending.

He is in New Hanover County jail at present & he is in a lot of trouble here in Wake County and of course in New Hanover. What in the world could be behind all this? He is 22 years old. Dayam.

ETA: Our little house was on the corner of Sand Dollar Lane & Canal Drive. Lotsa good times.

This has a list of all of the charges he's racked up thus far. He got First-degree Murder (x2) for the two ladies that died in the fire(s). The hit-and-run charges were dropped from Second-degree Murder to Felony Death by Motor Vehicle (x2).

I can't even imagine what's "up" with this kid... The earlier deaths were an accident while he was drunk/high. That's an unfortunate thing that can happen to anyone. But then he goes on that arson spree and acting crazy on the beach later that year.
Could the stress (or perhaps drug use related to the stress) of the earlier charges led to some kind of psychotic "break" or something?

Suspect in Carolina Beach arsons indicted on 1st-degree murder (Star News, Wilmington, NC 2/2/2015)
Two counts of first-degree murder.
Eleven counts of attempted first-degree murder.
Ten counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
One count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury.
Two counts of first-degree arson.
Three counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle.
One count of larceny after breaking and entering a motor vehicle.
Three counts of cruelty to animals.
Three counts of burning of personal property.
Two counts of misdemeanor larceny.

Doran was previously charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Darlene Maslar, 43, and Mary Cochran, 72. The women died when flames consumed their 12-unit condominium complex at 409 Carolina Beach Ave. S.
In all, the fires killed two people and four pets, damaged or destroyed 16 condos, displaced eight families and destroyed 10 cars.
He has hired Raleigh criminal defense attorneys Douglas Kingsbery and Roger Smith Jr. to represent him.

At the time of his arrest, Doran was out on bail and awaiting trial in a Wake County DWI fatal accident from February 2014 that killed two men. In that case, he's charged with two counts of felony death by motor vehicle, hit and run, driving while impaired, reckless driving and felony possession of a controlled substance. Those charges are still pending and Smith Jr. also represents him in that case.

Based on his picture and history above, I'd say alcohol and meth were two things that got into him. An overly indulgent parent who thought bonding him out without proper supervision or psych/drug evaluations was wise. No bond is not necessarily the worst thing in the world.

Hi to Ya, cuffem!! It's good to see you on this one! (Or any one I'm also on... ;-)

Just decided to check on the New Hanover Court dockets, and Doran was scheduled today for N.H. Superior Court. I can't find anything in MSM yet.

I'm quoting below from the article linked by you above, bflocket,

Doran made a court appearance Jan. 22 to waive his appointed counsel. He has hired Raleigh criminal defense attorneys Douglas Kingsbery and Roger Smith Jr. to represent him.

Suspect in Carolina Beach arsons indicted on 1st-degree murder

This firm is one of the very best and most highly-respected law firms in the Southeast. Roger Smith, Jr. is the son of Roger Smith, a very well-known and respected criminal attorney. These folks have nothing in common with some of those slick and wriggly defense attys that we dislike. They are good, and they are expensive. With this firm, this guy has got a chance of beating the needle, IMO.

A big :tyou: to you, KayElJay! I don't want to miss that one. Let's hope it will be streamed!

Very interesting, methinks.
Two consecutive terms of LWOP. Ouchie!!
All wrapped up with a bow around his neck (speakin' symbolically, y'know.)
Excellent.

Edited to add:

He also faces charges in Wake County, NC --felony death by motor vehicle, and hit-and-run and impaired driving. That court date is set for August 22. We'll see if he tries to plead-out on that case as well.

Here's the scoop on that one:

Parents of Carolina Beach murderer-arsonist Doran sued by victim's family - December 7th

http://www.starnewsonline.com/news/20161207/parents-of-carolina-beach-murderer-arsonist-doran-sued-by-victims-family

The complaint -- filed in New Hanover County Superior Court on behalf of victim Mary Cochran’s daughter -- alleges that Marshall Hudson Doran’s parents, Peter and Cynthia Doran, failed to recognize that their son’s “numerous concussive head injuries” left him susceptible to drugs and alcohol abuse and erratic behavior. The complaint states that in March 2014 the parents assumed responsibility in court for their son while bailing him out of jail in a fatal crash in February 2014, and that they knew he shouldn’t be drinking, but allowed him to continue while in their home.

“They were aware that from and after March 7, 2014, and prior to and on Dec. 5 and 6, 2014, Marshall was violating the terms and conditions of his bond," the complaint states. "They knew or should have known of the necessity for exercising control over Marshall, knowing his propensities, and could have reasonable foreseen that the failure to control Marshall would result in injurious consequences."

The lawsuit requests a jury trial seeks wrongful death, compensatory and punitive damages in excess of $30,000.
