The woman found dead in her Lancaster home Monday, a victim of homicide, was a sixth-grade teacher, authorities have confirmed.

Marcus Anthony Rutter, of the 700 block of East Marion Street, Lancaster, is charged with criminal homicide, burglary, conspiracy and robbery, said Lancaster City police Lt. Todd Umstead. Rutter was taken into custody around 10 p.m. Monday a block from his home, police said.

He is a suspect in the killing of Nicole R. Mathewson, 32, a sixth-grade teacher at Brownstown Elementary School. The school is part of the Conestoga Valley School District.

Police announced they are still investigating Mathewson's killing. They are looking to determine whether other people were involved in the crime.

Disgusting. These are the kind of crimes the anarchist "I can't breathe" crowd should be protesting. A beautiful woman dedicated to helping children murdered in cold blood by scum.

The boy told police he and an accomplice went to the Lancaster home of 32-year-old Nicole Mathewson intending to rob her, authorities said. The boy said he and his accomplice "applied force" to Mathewson and stole several items from the home, the police affidavit said.

The coroner told LNP that Mathewson died from several traumatic injuries...

The accomplice is not yet in custody, police said.

I truly hope this isn't the first thing you thought of when you read about Nicole's murder.

Moving on...

This is local to me and deeply distressing. She seems like a beautiful soul and it's worrying that sixteen year olds are so violent. Hoping for swift justice and remorse from these kids.

Rest in Peace Nicole. I'm so sorry you won't be here to share your passion with more kids. Prayers for her family, students and friends.

The Conestoga Valley teacher killed in Lancaster this week had two passions: math and kids.

"She loved it," said Conestoga Valley Superintendent Gerald Huesken. "If you were in her classroom, she was great about integrating technology into her instruction, having kids do hands-on activities, just making the abstract concepts of math more concrete."

Principal Andy Graybill said she was animated and sometimes silly with students. "It's sixth grade — you have to have a sense of humor."

Please don't worry about my thoughts. I am extremely sad that this beautiful woman had to suffer at the hands of these criminals. I am also disturbed at the culture that plants the seeds into young people's minds that this is the way to get ahead.

IMO it is a problem that needs addressing with the same gusto as the anti LE protests. If you disagree that's fine, just please don't condescend.

Rutter became a suspect after the police received an anonymous tip from the Lancaster City-County Crime Stoppers. That information did not label Rutter as the perpetrator, but gave police information that led to Rutter becoming a suspect and, eventually, being charged with the crime. Rutter has been interrogated by police. "Based on what [Rutter has] said, we're absolutely sure he participated in this murder, there's no other way around it," said Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman.

Stedman called the crime "absolutely devastating" and "grisly." "We're not going to go into the details of exactly how she was killed," Stedman told the press. "That will come out at the appropriate time... It's appalling, I will tell you that."

Police have not discovered a connection between Rutter and Mathewson at this time.

Shortly after police arrived at Mathewson's home, a message was broadcast over the county's emergency radio system urging authorities to be on the lookout for Mathewson's car, which was reported to have been "stolen during a homicide."

City police said Tuesday the black 2005 Mazda 3 had been found. They did not say where it was found.

Stedman said at the press conference that authorities were withholding information about where the vehicle was located and said there are "certain facts we don't want out there" right now.

Rutter told police that Moore beat Mathewson to death... then stole items from the home, including Mathewson's debit card, and her car: a black Mazda.

Early Tuesday morning, police located the Mazda at a home in Sterling Place, Lancaster Township. Moore was arrested there Tuesday evening, the affidavit shows.

Also after the killing, Moore allegedly used Mathewson's credit card to withdraw $500 from a city Turkey Hill store, the affidavit shows.

RIP Nicole. My heartfelt thoughts, prayers & condolences to family & friends.

Intruders didn’t know slain teacher, targeted her home "at random"

In the pitch-black darkness early Monday morning, Thomas Moore and Marcus Rutter went searching for a theft target.

They came upon Nicole Mathewson’s house at 710 North Franklin Street and apparently decided it would do.

[...]

In the hours after the killing, Rutter accessed his social-media page.

On Facebook, he “liked” a story posted Monday afternoon on LancasterOnline about Mathewson’s slaying.
