CLEVELAND, Ohio – Four people were indicted Monday in the 2013 murder of Cleveland firefighter William Walker, including Walker's wife.

Uloma Walker-Curry, 44, had been committing financial fraud in her husband's name and hired someone to kill him, according to a statement from the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutors contend that Walker-Curry was nervous that her husband would find out about her actions and incorrectly assumed that she could get money from his life insurance policy to pay for her debts.

She first reached out to Chad Padgett, her daughter's boyfriend, who recruited his cousin, Christopher Hein, who in turn hired Ryan Dorty to perform the hit, according to the statement. The four face charges of aggravated murder, murder, conspiracy, and felonious assault.

According to the prosecutor's office, a flurry of text messages from the night of the murder shows the men searching for a gun, which they refer to as a "ham." Another text message talks about when Walker was expected to get home. And a series of final texts were sent after the shooting, including one that said "We gotta body," prosecutors say.

One of Walker-Curry’s three children, a daughter who asked to only be referred to by her first name, spoke with FOX 8 about the arrest. Jessica said she actually moved out of state years ago because of her rocky relationship with her mother.

She called her mom hurtful and a pathological liar, but said she never imagined she could also be a cold-hearted killer.

“I cannot, I cannot even think how this is possible,” Jessica said. “But I wouldn’t put it past her. I’m so disgusted. I’m hurt… The way she performed at the funeral... I feel really really bad.”

Jessica didn’t know her sisters boyfriend, who is also charged in the case, but met him at the funeral and described him as unemotional and detached. She isn’t sure if she will contact her mother in jail, and said right now her thoughts and prayers are with the Walker family.

I find it incredibly depressing that not one of the four men arrested reported the murder plot to LE.

A 23-year-old Cleveland man has agreed to serve 28 years in prison for serving as a middleman in the 2013 murder-for-hire plot of his girlfriend's stepfather, a veteran Cleveland firefighter.

Cuyahoga County prosecutors reduced an aggravated murder charge against Chad Padgett to involuntary manslaughter in exchange for his testimony at trial in the Nov. 3, 2013 slaying of Cleveland Fire Lt. William Walker.

Padgett accepted the deal on Monday and pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, conspiracy, aggravated robbery and kidnapping charges before Common Pleas Judge Matthew McMonagle.

Padgett, Dorty and the daughter all agreed to testify against Curry and Hein, and will be formally sentenced following their testimony.

Hein and Curry have maintained their innocence in court filings and continue to fight the charges. They are scheduled to face trial in February.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Uloma Curry-Walker offered her daughter's boyfriend $10,000 to kill her veteran Cleveland firefighter husband, then left her husband's cremated remains behind in his car and moved to North Carolina after the deed was done, prosecutors said.

Lt. William Walker's ashes were found by Cleveland police in the back of Walker's car in a J.D. Byrider car lot after the car was repossessed, Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Blaise Thomas told jurors Monday during opening statements in Curry-Walker's murder-conspiracy trial.

Curry-Walker, who sat motionless in a patterned dress with a black blazer, faces up to life in prison without parole if convicted of aggravated murder in her husband's Nov. 3, 2013 death at his home on Lampson Drive near the East Cleveland border.

Here are a few takeaways from Monday's opening statements:

1. Birth of the plot

Curry-Walker and Walker dated for about two years before they married, Thomas said. Unbeknownst to Walker, Curry-Walker went on a "spending spree" and racked up significant credit card debt in Walker's name.

Thomas said Curry-Walker pushed for a smaller wedding with little ceremony in the summer of 2013, and they were quickly married in a civil ceremony to establish herself as the beneficiary on Walker's city pension and life insurance policy.

She then went to her daughter's boyfriend, Chad Padgett, and offered to pay him $10,000 to "take out" Walker, Thomas said. Padgett, a marijuana dealer, accepted the offer and reached out to his cousin, Christopher Hein. Hein trafficked in firearms, and eventually secured a 9mm semiautomatic that he gave to Ryan Dorty, who lived in the
Dorty ambushed Walker as he walked into his house about 8:30 p.m. carrying a bag of food from McDonald's, Thomas said.

Curry-Walker gave Padgett some of the money, and he distributed it among Hein and Dorty, Thomas said. But Curry-Walker said she would have the rest of the money once the insurance payout came, Thomas said. She never paid the full amount, Thomas said.

Wife who bought Cleveland firefighter's murder gets life without parole

Common Pleas Judge Sherrie Miday sentenced Uloma Cury-Walker to life in prison without parole for soliciting the November 2013 killing of her then-husband of four months William Walker because Miday believed Curry-Walker could kill again.

"You took a life with no remorse, no consideration of the lives you would destroy," Miday told Curry-Walker. "Do I think you could come up with another plan if you were back in the community? Absolutely."

She showed little emotion as family members of Walker, including his adult daughter, sobbed and recalled the life of a man who loved nothing more than to be with and provide for his family, and serve his community.

Curry-Walker only shed tears when a fellow firefighter spoke about Walker's service as a Free Mason and a mentor to his fellow firefighters.

Walker represented the "essence of a firefighter," and was what children wanted to be when they grew up, Miday said.

"I don't think she understood the magnitude of the man she took," firefighter Derek Trip said.

In 2016, Chad Padgett pled guilty to Involuntary Manslaughter with Conspiracy and was sentenced to 28 years; Ryan Dorty pled guilty to Aggravated Murder and was sentenced to 23 years to life. Curry-Walker’s daughter was sentenced in juvenile court. Last month, Christopher Hein pled to Aggravated Murder and Conspiracy and was sentenced to 18 years.
