An Alaska assistant district attorney who once was a Washington state lawmaker was shot and killed in the Arctic community of Barrow, according to officials with the North Slope Borough.

Brian Sullivan, a 48-year-old Barrow resident, was killed Monday, according to a press release sent out by borough Mayor Charlotte Brower. Police had responded to a reported shooting at 5318 Laura Madison St. at roughly 10 p.m., which resulted in Sullivan’s death, the release said.

Fischer was in a jealous rage when he barged into the house of his former girlfriend and opened fire on Sullivan, who was sitting in the living room, court documents say.

Sullivan had been dating Mabel Kaleak for just a few weeks, police said. Kaleak had a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, who was stalking her and had a history of violence against her and her family, authorities said.

"Police believe that Fischer shot Sullivan twice in the face with a 20-gauge shotgun from a distance estimated at 10 feet (or less), as Sullivan was sitting on a couch," wrote North Slope Police Lt. Travis Welch in a crime report. "In other words, Fischer shot a man who was seated, unarmed, and posed no threat," he added.

A man accused of shooting an Alaska prosecutor in a jealous rage over a woman was indicted on murder charges by a grand jury.

Ronald Fischer, 47, was charged Thursday with first- and second- degree murder in the Dec. 8 shotgun death of Brian Sullivan, an assistant district attorney in Barrow, the country’s northernmost community... The indictment also charges Fischer with assault by placing the woman in fear with a shotgun.

The indictment was handed up in Nome because Sullivan had been presenting cases to a grand jury in Barrow. Fischer is expected to be arraigned on Monday.

After days of deliberation, the jury conscripted into the murder case of Ronald Fischer reached a unanimous verdict on the seven counts against him.

In court on Thursday, the jury representative read aloud each of these seven counts, and said that they had found Fischer guilty of each one.

These counts include murder in the first and second degrees, three counts of third and fourth degree assault, resisting arrest, and violation of release.

Next, Fischer will be sentenced by the judge presiding over the case. That sentencing is scheduled for April 6 in Utqiagvik.

Utqiagvik man sentenced to 105 years for murder

Ronald Fischer in December 2014 killed 48-year-old Brian Sullivan with a shotgun in Utqiagvik, formerly known as Barrow, the nation's northernmost city.

Superior Court Judge Gregory Miller sentenced Fischer to the maximum 99 years on a first-degree murder charge and six years more for assault convictions.

Miller said Fischer's history of assaults, the escalating nature of his violence and the public's need for protection were factors in the long sentence.
