Police officer shot, killed overnight in Tarpon Springs (FL)

A Tarpon Springs police officer was shot and killed overnight, and a suspect has been taken into custody, authorities said.

The shooting happened at 3 a.m. at or near 199 Grand Boulevard, a few blocks from the city's Sponge Docks. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office and Tarpon Springs Police Department are investigating.

Investigators are also working a nearby second scene on Athens Street, where the shooter fled in a white Hyundai sedan. The shooter crashed into a power pole and snapped it and then crashed into a pickup truck, Pinellas County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Cecila Barreda said.

Authorities haven't said whether there are any other injuries or identified the officer or suspect. Bay News 9 has learned that the officer and the suspect are both male.

wow. guess it's open season for cop killers. wow.

Ex NYPD & father of 5.

Oh no....

I don't know why, but this just makes the story more tragic to me. I envision the backstory of this officer leaving the "Big City" for the benefit of his family and career - only to meet this end (literally).

This world makes me

:sigh:

They identified the suspect and searching I discovered he was released from prison in Florida March , was on 3 years probation following his time in prison, and had absconded. So he was a felon with a firearm, had a warrant for VOP, and probably had drugs on him which is why he was in prison in the first place. He's still going back to prison but this time he's not getting out. What a piece of crap.

I live 5 min from where this happened

I know you put "Big City" in quotes, but Tampa/St. Pete has about 3 times the population of SF/Oakland. You have to add in Hayward, San Jose, and four or five counties to get a bigger metropolitan area in what we Californians call "the Bay Area". I doubt if many in Tampa think they are in a small town.

Agreed folks from tampa would not consider themselves from a small town, although i would think that those in palm harbour and Tarpon springs still do.

Tarpon Springs is a small town. The population is about 24,000. It is a suburb of Tampa about 30 minutes away. The crime's here are mostly thefts, greeks lighting off greek bombs and making a lot of noise on Greek Easter, and DUI's. There ave been a number of homicides in Tarpon Springs the past couple years and they where all domestic/family related.

Tarpon Springs is also a close knit community proud in it's Greek heritage and Orthodox religion. This guy was from Tampa according to his past arrest records. I don't know why he came here. The police are very friendly here and people know them personally because we are a close knit community. They are already leaving flowers at the police station entrance.

Thanks for putting that into perspective. "The City" of San Francisco is only "7 x 7" Miles; however, it is densely populated. My "big city" comparison was in context to the officer leaving the "Big Apple" - New York City - for what was his current post. No other context or comparison was meant.

Sorry if I wasn't clear.

This is infuriating! From Sleuthster's link:

(snip)

According to investigators, Officer Kondek responded to a noise complaint at 199 Grand Boulevard at about 2:00 a.m. The suspect was banging on residential doors.
Investigators say the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Marco Antonio Parilla
Jr., and a female companion arrived at the house and pulled into the driveway. The woman remained in the vehicle, while Parilla began knocking on multiple doors looking for someone who he said had "dimed him out" which is a violation of his probation.
Detectives say a neighbor asked the woman to lower the music in the car. When she refused, the neighbor called 911 with a noise complaint. Detectives say the woman then began to back out of the driveway.
Officer Kondek arrived on scene and exited his vehicle. Detectives say Parilla walked towards the officer and opened fire. Officer Kondek managed to return fire just before falling to the ground.

Parilla then ordered the woman out of the vehicle, took the wheel and as he fled the scene, ran over Officer Kondek. Detectives say that this occurred as another individual who lived at the Grand Boulevard address opened fire on Parilla, because he thought Parilla was looking for him. Parilla fled in the vehicle. Tarpon Springs Police engaged in a brief pursuit before Parilla crashed into a pole and then into a parked vehicle at Athens and Cross Street.
Following the crash Parilla exited the vehicle and fled on foot, and was apprehended shortly thereafter by a Tarpon Spring Police Officer.

What an absolutely chaotic chain of events!

This is Felony Murder, at minimum :cow:

:gaah:
