Daily Mail, with video:

Coming up next, the end of the world: intern reveals clip of band playing "Nearer My
God to Thee" that CNN founder Ted Turner 'wanted to be run during the apocalypse'

⁍ Clip is a version of military band playing hymn 'Nearer My God to Thee'
⁍ The minute-long segment is believed to be stored on an archive system
⁍ Turner said channel would broadcast until the end of the world when it was founded 34 years ago
⁍ File believed to be attached with bold red letters 'HFR (hold for release) till end of the world confirmed'

A reassessment seven years after CNN's founding might have led to choosing a more uptempo, fun number from another Georgia enterprise, in 1987:

Instead, Ted evidently opted for the tune rather famously not played by the ship's band as the Titanic sunk.

When I saw the post I thought of that.
Peter Buck is my boss' cousin.

They couldn't come up with a better quality video? Even for the 80s that was not good.

I think most folks would prefer REM!

Okay, TV Mogul Person out there -- let's say you owned a network, had indisputable confirmation the world was soon ending, and thus got to soundtrack the proceedings as, in effect, Life's Final Credits rolled across the sky.

What would you pick for that last song? anyone? Something happy, sad, bittersweet? religious? irreligious? angry or resigned, silly, simpering, cynical -- or something in between?

Maybe I'd go with genus: ironical; species: bittersweet, and thus with Ms. Skeeter Davis. Maybe.
