A woman, who has been identified by the Clark County coroner as Kathy Shines, 54, of Las Vegas, was found dead next to a garbage dumpster at a strip mall near Nellis Boulevard and Desert Inn Road... where police say a surveillance camera caught the murder on tape. Police sources say the video shows the murderer dragging the victim's body. The killer stayed with the body for at least 30 minutes.
Joella Johnson is trying to come to grips with the loss of her best friend... Johnson said her friend was collecting cans to pay her bills, and she usually tagged along with Kathy to keep her company. "I know she was back there," Johnson said. "She collects cans back there. She's there every single night"...
Joe Cunico, a neighbor, said: "You couldn't find a better person. We've been neighbors for 13 years. She'd give you the last dollar from her pocket."

On Jan. 7 at around 4:35 a.m., detectives from the LVMPD Criminal Apprehension Team arrested 24-year-old Jerry Howard of Las Vegas in connection with Shines' death. Howard was taken into custody without incident at an apartment complex on the 3000 block of South Nellis Boulevard. He was transported to the Clark County Detention Center and is facing charges of:
Murder (1st degree) with a deadly weapon
Sexual assault with a deadly weapon
Kidnapping (1st degree) with a deadly weapon
Robbery with a deadly weapon
