For Kim Jones, life was about caring for others. The mother spent the last several years working at an organization that helps abused and neglected children. But with the pull of a trigger yesterday morning - a single bullet fired into the dedicated child-advocacy worker's head as she went off to work - that was all gone.

Police said Jones, 56, left her North Philadelphia home about 9 a.m. and walked less than a block to a bus stop at 12th and Jefferson streets, just as she had each day for several years on her way to her job at Center City-based Turning Points for Children...

Yesterday morning, police said, a cold-blooded killer was watching Jones. Homicide Capt. James Clark said it was someone who studied the woman's routine, and was lying in wait until about 9:15 a.m. when Jones was ambushed as she stood in the winter chill at the corner. She was killed instantly by a single gunshot to the back of her head. Jones' phone, headphones, purse and jewelry were intact when police arrived minutes later...

Her boss says Kim Jones' job at the agency was not the kind of job where she may encounter disgruntled or unhappy people...

Authorities are going through surveillance cameras to see if they captured images of a black heavy-set man wearing dark clothing carrying a black duffel who was seen fleeing the scene.

Investigators say Jones has been divorced from her ex-husband for over 25 years and recently remarried just before Christmas.

This is just so tragic. It has been all over my local news (Philadelphia) and the senselessness of it all makes me so sad.

Jones had her headphones on, playing gospel music, and likely had no idea that she was being stalked by her killer, a "heartless predator" who had camped outside her house for nearly an hour before his attack, according to Homicide Capt. James Clark. "After looking at a lot of video, it's clear that this was very well-planned," Clark said.

Friday, homicide detectives released new footage in Jones' slaying. In the chilling video, Jones is clearly seen walking toward her bus stop. Meanwhile, a menacing figure lurks in the background. Dressed in black, the suspect is seen calmly approaching Jones from behind, as if also waiting for a bus.

When the suspect closes the distance, the camera pans away, but police say it's clear what happens next: The killer pulls out a handgun and fires once at point-blank range before calmly walking away. Surveillance cameras recorded the killer boarding a SEPTA train at the Broad Street Line's Cecil B. Moore station, exiting at the Hunting Park station. There, the trail goes cold.

The killer, dressed nearly in all black and sporting white or silver Beats headphones, "made a point of never looking up at the video cameras," Clark said...

The man was described as 5-foot-10 to 6-foot-1 with a stocky build. He was wearing a black two-toned jacket with a lighter shade of black across the back of the sleeves. He wore black pants, a dark hoodie, a dark-colored bomber aviator-styled hat with flaps on the side and colored fur lining, dark-colored gloves, and dark-colored sneakers with a white stripe around the sole area. His race or ethnicity could not be determined.

Anyone with information on the case can call 215-686-TIPS or dial 911. There is a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

Dang....I wonder what the motive could possibly have been....Kim seems to have been a peaceful, giving woman, going about her business of living her life. Wth?

Randolph Sanders was worried - his boss was onto him. He knew Kim Jones, his supervisor at Families and Schools Together, an after-school outreach program, suspected he was misappropriating funds, law enforcement sources said Sunday.

He knew that she had scheduled a meeting for that very morning with Department of Human Services officials, the sources said. He was worried she would report him. He was worried that he would lose his job. So, law enforcement sources said, he packed a gun in his duffel bag...

On Sunday, investigators from the Homicide Task Force arrested Sanders, who gave a videotaped and written confession to detectives, law enforcement sources said.

Capt. James Clark, commander of the homicide unit, said investigators believe Randolph Sanders, 36, stole about $40,000 from Families and Schools Together, an after-school outreach program...

After the killing, Sanders appeared in television interviews mourning her death.

In an e-mail to the Daily News Monday morning, Jones' son, Andre Jourden, said he did not know Sanders well, but had met him a few times at events that his mother had put together. "The fact that he could even look any of my family members in the eye and shake my hand the day of my mother's funeral is just flat out unimaginable," Jourden wrote.

Clark says surveillance video of the shooter led them to a vehicle, which led them to Sanders.

Clark says surveillance cameras captured the suspect through Temple University's campus, onto the subway system and exiting the subway at Broad and Hunting Park. The cameras then captured the suspect walking to a vehicle, a 2007 GMC Yukon, parked on the 4200 block of Carlisle Street.

Detectives' big break in the case was when they realized Sanders drove the same type of vehicle.

Sanders just weeks ago had attended Jones’s funeral and made a show of grief in television interviews after her death. “We’re all just stunned — just stunned,” he told the local ABC affiliate the day after Jones was killed.

Twenty-five years after Jones had divorced, she remarried in December. Sanders was among the attendees at the wedding.

On the day after her death, he told the ABC station: “I believe Tuesday she was celebrating her 30 days of being married. I was fortunate to be invited to the wedding. She was very happy – so this is very disturbing.”

This kind of crime is a real head-scratcher for me. With Jones about to turn him for theft/embezzlement, Sanders had two leading options: a) confess and likely lose his job and (maybe) face fines or further punishment or b) don a ridiculous disguise, fail to elude surveillance and murder Jones, probably get caught anyway, and face life in prison PLUS whatever he was going to get for the original theft/embezzlement. So why choose b?

Why do so many people who strut and flounder across the virtual pages of this site choose some variant of b?

Ex-children's aid official convicted of murdering boss at North Phila. bus stop

http://www.philly.com/philly/news/crime/Ex-childrens-aid-official-convicted-of-murdering-boss-at-North-Phila-bus-stop.html

A social services official at a private Philadelphia children’s aid organization was found guilty of first-degree murder Monday in what the prosecutor called the execution of his boss a day after she confronted him about $42,000 in missing funds.

Randolph Sanders, 39, of Northeast Philadelphia, was found guilty by a Common Pleas Court jury in the Jan. 13, 2015, shooting of Kim Jones, 56, as she waited for a bus from her home in the Yorktown neighborhood in North Philadelphia to her job as a program director for Turning Points for Children in Center City.

The first-degree murder verdict carried a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole. Judge Glenn B. Bronson immediately sentenced Sanders and added consecutive sentences of 8½ to 17 years in prison for three gun charges of which Sanders was found guilty.

Sanders thanked Bronson for a fair trial and said, “I’m sorry for this entire situation. I understand what’s shown on the video, but I still stand by my innocence.

“I did not do this. I didn’t steal any money, and I didn’t do this to Kim,” Sanders added. “I would never do this to Kim.”

Bronson said the verdict was based on some of “the most overwhelming evidence in a case I have ever seen in 35 years as a judge and a lawyer.”

That evidence included Sanders’ confession to the slaying in an interview that was transcribed by homicide detectives and then recorded on video.
