AZ - Phoenix woman dies after giving birth to quadruplets

She was rushed to hospital with 190/90 blood pressure on Tuesday
On January 16, a month before the due date, she delivered three girls and a boy in Phoenix, Arizona, hospital. They are all alive and healthy
Hours later she passed away, doctors investigating cause of death

I suspect that in the end we may hear a diagnosis of eclampsia along with the accompanying complications. This is so very tragic. My thoughts and prayers are with the babies and family.

That is so heartbreaking. her husband must be absolutely devastated. Sending my prayers his way. :rose:

I actually first thought bleeding... high blood pressure should have been picked up in the hospital.

Yes but they would have been doing her blood pressure every 15 minutes after surgery.
So it's highly unlikely her blood pressure would have sky rocketed so fast to kill her without other symptoms.
You have other symptoms... you get seizures and headaches and there are signs pretty fast.
If high blood pressure killed this woman within 24 hours of surgery it was negligence by the hospital. :twocents:

Bleeding can be a little harder to detect. Generally you will notice swelling but it is possible it can be concealed.
Infection shouldn't be the reason because they should have done blood work.

It may end up being some kind of quick and sudden thing.
A blood clot that went to her lung or brain for example. That could be quick and without symptoms until it was too late.

She went in with high blood pressure I wonder why she went into labor? So sad.

There is a very rare, but highly fatal complication called amniotic fluid embolism, now more recently named anaphylactoid syndrome of pregnancy.

Here is a story from last year:

There was another successful resuscitation in MN about 5-10 years ago. These tragedies are almost always fatal.

And info on this rare complication:

From the suddenness described in news articles, I don't think it was a hemorrhage situation. Possibly seizures and cardiovascular collapse from eclampsia. But amniotic fluid embolism sounds really possible.

So tremendously sad.

She had quadruple blood and fluid volume. I thought several things: uterine rupture, bleeding out, eclampsia, aneurysm...

It was a high risk pregnancy for both the mom and the babies. It's very very sad. I never caught how many weeks she was and if the babies are expected to survive.

ETA: amniotic fluid embolism is possible too..

I'm catching up-- no way she was only a month before due date. (36 weeks)

Quad pregnancies usually don't go beyond 30 weeks, if you even get that far.

It may have been a month before scheduled date of section.

Morales initially went to the hospital for high blood pressure, according to Todman, who added she was unsure of how exactly her friend died.

The hospital would not provide that information, the AP reported.

Erica Morales, 36, never got to hold her newborns before she died early Friday morning after a Caesarean-section surgery at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, Nicole Todman said.

Hiandmighty, I am not sure about the labor, but from what I read she went in for high blood pressure, I guess the way I see it is that somewhere something happened to cause the Dr's to perform the emergency c-section. I call it an emergency because from what I have read what she went to the hospitak for didn't have to do with the pregnancy, directly.

IDK Maybe it's me but I feel that something is amiss. jmo idk Seems that a cause of death word be known.

The hospital would not disclose how Morales died, the Associated Press reported.

I believe babies are expected to survive. She was using fertility treatments, apparently resulting in high risk multiple pregnancy.

I saw one article said she was 7 months pregnant, so roughly about 28 weeks. This makes much more sense. With quads, 34 weeks is the near impossible ideal goal, with 32 weeks a good shot, 30 weeks more likely and 28 weeks considered good.

I agree they probably elected a c-section without labor for some medical condition/reason that the family probably doesn't understand and the hospital can't release because of HIPPA.

I read the babies are all around 2 pounds, which is good. Provided none have respiratory issues or infection, they are hopefully just growing and feeding at this point.

If she had high blood pressure due to preeclampsia/eclampsia, then it had everything to do with the pregnancy.

Emergency c-section would be considered to be the only way to "cure" severe eclampsia.

Of course the hospital cannot discuss her case without permission from her next of kin.

Regardless of the cause, this is so very tragic.

A friend of a friend died under similar circumstances. It turned out to be a pulmonary embolism.

7 months is about 32 weeks. I had twins at 36 weeks and all was well, thank goodness. I suspect, and the reports say she had pre-eclampsia, that they wanted to do C-section sooner and mom refused (MOO) until finally it was an urgent situation and they did the C-section but she passed from complications due to the eclampsia. With her friend saying that she doesn't know the cause of death and doesn't need to, that makes me wonder if my suspicions are true. Condolences to the family, the Daddy has a long road ahead.

A friend of mine had pre-e and they tried to do an induction (she was only 23 weeks) and it wasn't working, had to do an emergency c section to save her, she was hospitalized for over a week after from all the complications. Her BP wasn't dropping and she was still having seizures for days. Baby is fine and healthy now and so is mom but pre-e is very scary and serious. If she was refusing a c section when they were recommending it they might not have been able to save her. So sad. Sending good juju to those babies~~~~

I haven't seen mentioned anywhere that she was refusing the C-section. I don't believe they would ever try to do an induction with quadruplets, so this was always going to be a C-section. She mentions "Jehovah God" multiple times on her facebook.
Was she a Jehovah witness?
Jehvah witnesses don't believe in blood transfusions.
