The body of Sharon Ward, who was 17, was found on Sunday, Feb. 28, 1982, about 20 feet from the edge of Jacobs Road, near Wynn Road, in Oregon. She died of blunt-force trauma, officials said.

She was last seen alive at about 10 p.m. the night before, leaving a North Toledo garage, according to police. She was believed to be heading home to Poplar Street in East Toledo.

"She was dumped in a field and had been struck in the head multiple times and had her wrists slit," said Detective Sgt. Kelly Thibert of the Oregon Police Department.

Detectives at the time were never able to close the case, and Ward's killer is still at large. Police decided to take another look at the case after communicating with Ward's friend Karen Jones on Facebook. "Right now, we're in the process of collecting all the evidence that does exist. Some of it is at different agencies," Sgt. Thibert said. But that's only part of the puzzle.

"We're hoping that people who knew stuff back then, who may have been reluctant to come forward, come forward [now]," she said.

Hope they will be able to uncover some new leads here. It's been a very long time for family and friends to go with no answers.

Slitting someone's wrists seems like an unusual way to murder...? (I know she was also struck in the head.) Just wondering if there are other cases with that or similar mutilation/attack that might be related. I guess the wrist-slitting could have been for the purpose of making sure she actually died, so the perp could hurry on away.

Yes, the slitting of the wrists. Wonder if handcuffs could do that, or would the killer want her to bleed out prior to moving the body?

Double thread, sorry all!

Oregon police continue searching for teenage girl's killer, the department's lone cold case
When investigators discovered the body of a teenage girl in the winter of 1982, no clear evidence pointed to a killer.

Sharon Ward, 17, was found on Feb. 28 of that year in a snow-covered cornfield with her wrists slashed along a sparsely populated road, near Jacobs and Wynn roads in Oregon. Nearly four decades later, the case remains unsolved.

Oregon police received numerous tips pointing to the same man. The coroner found DNA on her body during an autopsy. But the pieces never fit. The killer was never found.

But in 2013, Oregon police reopened the department’s only cold case.

Oregon police reopen 1982 teen-slaying case

“We’d love to give this family some closure,” Oregon police Sgt. Kelly Thibert told The Blade in 2013. “She was just a 17-year-old kid. Certainly, justice has not been served for her, which is sad.”

Last week, on the anniversary date of when her body was found, Oregon police turned to social media asking the public for assistance in solving the department’s only cold case.

''OREGON, Ohio — Oregon police have identified a person of interest in a 1982 cold-case murder.

Police on Wednesday said they want to speak with Dale Schuller, who also goes by the name of Jack Schuller. Police say they do know where Schuller currently resides.

They say he was with 17-year-old Sharon Ward just before she was killed nearly 40 years ago. Schuller is 65 years old today and was 27 at the time of Ward's death.

Ward was killed Feb. 28, 1982. The homicide remains the Oregon Police Department’s only unsolved death.

The teenager's body was found in a cornfield off Jacobs Road, near Wynn Road. Ward had been hit twice on the head and her wrists were slashed. According to police accounts, she appeared to have crawled in the field in the snow to try to get help, but died during the effort.

The police department also announced a $25,000 reward to anyone whose verifiable information leads to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for Ward's murder.

Anyone with information about Schuller's whereabouts in February of 1982, or about Ward's murder, is asked to call Oregon police at 419-698-7102 or Crime Stopper at 419-255-1111. There is no need to call police regarding Schuller's current residence; that information is known to authorities.''
