A breakthrough in the case of a Footscray man found dead in a burnt-out car has detectives searching for a getaway car used by his killers.
The body of 42-year-old Footscray man Kenan Balikel was found in the boot of a burnt-out, unregistered grey Peugeot 407 wagon on Bulla-Diggers Rest Road in the early hours of October 31 last year.
Homicide detectives have been investigating whether the father of five was killed a in car trade gone wrong. He was last seen alive leaving a mechanics shop on Freight Road in Tullamarine the previous afternoon.
Detectives have now established that the Peugeot travelled 14 kilometres along the Tullamarine Freeway to Diggers Rest on October 30 between 11.40pm and midnight.
Mr Balikel's charred remains were found about 20 to 40 minutes later.
Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey said detectives believe a second vehicle must have been involved, due to the remote location.
"Our investigations have led us to believe that another car may have travelled with the Peugeot to where Kenan's remains were found in the burnt-out car," he said.
"Those involved had to have had a way to leave the scene and we are appealing to anyone with information to come forward."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

CCTV may hold key to Melbourne 'body in the boot' murder

Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey said police also recently obtained CCTV footage from a factory, showing a 4WD tailing Mr Balikel's car in a convoy-like fashion just 40 minutes before his body was found.
"This is certainly a breakthrough in our investigation," he told reporters.
"It's taken some time to get this CCTV footage ... we had to get some experts involved."

He said police weren't saying the 4WD was definitely involved but they wish to speak to the people driving it, due to its close proximity to Mr Balikel's car.
The 4WD is a twin cab utility with a hard top canopy, thought the make isn't clear from the footage.

A Kealba man, known as “The Captain” in the west’s tight-knit Croatian community, has been sentenced to a community corrections order for disposing a body of Footscray man at Diggers Rest.

Ante Bacak, 46, admitted to helping dispose Footscray man Kenan Balikel’s, whose charred remains were found in a burnt out car on the Bulla-Diggers Rest Road, in the early hours of October 31, last year.

The 42-year-old was hit over the head with a crowbar by business associate John Butorac, who later got a friend to help him get rid of Mr Balikel's body by burning it in the boot of a car.

In sentencing Butorac to 12 years' jail on Friday, Victorian Supreme Court Justice Lex Lasry said the 2014 killing was "violent and extremely serious"...

Butorac was handed a non-parole period of eight and a half years. He has already served 658 days in pre-sentence custody.
