The case... has turned into a multi-agency interstate probe featuring federal agents and prosecutors. They are suddenly interested in a Charlotte robbery case where one of the defendants has already pleaded guilty and been released on probation and the victim's sister is claiming that her brother died with a gun in his hand defending his family when killed.

Debbie London, 61, and Doug London, 63, were found shot in their lakefront home on a secluded Lake Wylie peninsula late on Oct. 23...

It is clear Doug London was armed May 25, when he shot one of three men allegedly involved in the robbery of the store on South Boulevard in Charlotte. In that incident, police say Jamell Cureton, 22, shot at London while robbing the store. Doug London shot back, hitting Cureton. Both Cureton and Nana Adoma later admitted involvement, police say.

Malcolm Jarrell Hartley, 22, and Briana Johnson, 18, both of Concord, were arrested Thursday and charged with two counts of murder. Johnson is at the York County Detention center, being held without bond. Hartley is in Mecklenburg County awaiting an extradition hearing.

Multiple sources confirmed to WBTV that Hartley is a "high-ranking" member of the Bloods gang. According to NC Department of Corrections online records, Hartley was convicted in 2013 for conspiracy to commit armed robbery...

Investigators say the shootings were not a random act of violence, but did not say whether it was believed to be connected to a May robbery of the couple's Charlotte store. During the robbery, Doug London shot one of the suspects. "It was not a random act of violence. It was connected to another crime," Officials said Friday.

Thursday in court, prosecutors told a judge Doug London was the only witness in the robbery of his south Charlotte mattress store in May 2014, and said "the murder took place in order to stop the husband from appearing in court to testify"...

Hartley did not say anything in court. He was asking for bond on a probation violation but the judge denied his request. He has been fighting extradition to South Carolina to face the murder charges.

On March 12, a Mecklenburg judge will rule on South Carolina’s request to bring Hartley across the state line to stand trial. His co-defendant in the murder case, 19-year-old Briana Johnson of Concord, already is being held in the York County Jail.

The apparent gang ties to the killings have put local officials on alert. Last month, two judges and the Charlotte city attorney were placed under protective watch after their photos were found in the cell of one of the robbery suspects.

The case of the reputed gang killings of a Charlotte-area couple took a major turn Tuesday with five accused members of United Blood Nation pleading guilty for their roles in the 2014 killings of Doug and Debbie London...

Missing from the ranks of purported gang members who walked into U.S. Magistrate Judge David Keesler’s courtroom were Jamell “Assassin” Cureton, who ordered and helped plan the hit from his Mecklenburg jail cell, and Malcolm Hartley, who carried it out, prosecutors say. Both remain in custody and face possible death penalties in the case...

All five will be sentenced later... Charges stemming from the Londons’ killings remain pending against seven of the reputed gang members, though that number could change with additional pleas.

Another reputed Charlotte gang member has agreed to plead guilty in connection with the 2014 killings of Doug and Debbie London in their Lake Wylie, S.C., home.

Nehemijel “Swagg Out” Houston, 21, of Charlotte, was charged with racketeering conspiracy and is in the Mecklenburg County jail pending the federal case against him.

His plea agreement, filed Thursday, remains sealed.

Meeting to determine death penalty set for man accused of shooting couple

A federal committee will meet later this month to discuss whether prosecutors should seek the death penalty in the case of the accused shooter of a Lake Wylie couple.

The Capital Review Committee is scheduled to meet Feb. 29 regarding Malcolm Hartley, according to documents filed by his defense team Tuesday. Hartley is one of 12 accused United Blood Nation gang members indicted in late 2014. Several face charges directly connected to the murder of Doug and Debbie London.

Seven of the 12 suspects in the indictment have already pleaded guilty. None have been sentenced.

The alleged Charlotte gang members tied to the murders of Doug and Debbie London have now been linked to other acts of violence, from murder and robbery to retaliatory shootings of rivals.

A new federal indictment released this week alludes to a UBN meeting within weeks of the couple’s killings when the gang allegedly debated the assassination of one of its own members who was believed to be cooperating with police in the London investigation.

The Lake Wylie, S.C., couple was gunned down at their home on Oct. 23, 2014. Authorities say the pair was killed to keep Doug London from testifying at the trial of three gang members who had attempted to rob the Londons’ mattress store three months before.

Twelve alleged gang members were indicted last year for planning or carrying out the killings. Seven have pleaded guilty and are cooperating with prosecutors. The remaining five will be arraigned next Friday on the additional charges included in the new indictment.

Prosecutors say they have linked the gang to at least two other killings: the unsolved 2102 shooting death of Ronald Martin; and the 2013 execution-style slaying of Kwamne Clyburn, a homeless teenager, in a southwest Charlotte park.

The four alleged gang members who appeared in court Friday – Nana Adoma, Randall Avery “Foe” Hankins, Malcom “Bloody Silent” Hartley and Jamell “Murda Mell” Cureton – have been narrowed down from an original list of 12 that were indicted last year for planning or carrying out the killings. The rest have pleaded guilty, excluding Ahkeem McDonald, who entered a not guilty plea outside of court.

Gang members found guilty of Lake Wylie murders

Three years after Doug and Debbie London were gunned down in their Lake Wylie home, a federal jury closed the loop on the killings Friday, finding three Charlotte gang members guilty of murder and other crimes.

Randall “Foe” Hankins, Nana “Ratchet” Adoma, and Ahkeem “Lil Keem” McDonald all face life sentences after being convicted of murder, racketeering, conspiracy, firearms and other gang-related crimes. They will be sentenced at a later date.

In all, 12 alleged members of the Charlotte cell of United Blood Nation were indicted in connection with the killings.

Nine have pleaded guilty, including trigger man Malcolm “Bloody Silent” Hartley and Jamell Cureton, a gang leader who gave the order for the killings from his cell in the Mecklenburg County Jail. To avoid a possible death penalty, Hartley and Cureton pleaded guilty last year to two counts of racketeering murder and have begun serving life terms in prison.

The other seven await sentencing.

David Lee Fudge, 24, of Pineville, N.C., was ordered to serve 26 years in prison and five years of supervised release. He pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy and murder for the Londons’ murder, and Hobbs Act robbery for his role in the robbery of the Pineville-area mattress store.

Nehemijel Maurice Houston, 23, of Charlotte, 20 years in prison and five years of supervised release.

Daquan Lamar Everrett, 23, of Charlotte, 13 years in prison and five years of supervised release.

Three-and-a-half years after Doug and Debbie London were executed in their home, the last of the Charlotte gang members linked to the killings have been sent to federal prison for the rest of their lives.

On Monday, U.S. District Judge Max Cogburn handed down life sentences to convicted United Blood Nation members Randall "Foe" Hankins, Nana "Ratchet" Adoma, and Ahkeem "Lil Keem" McDonald. Three other gang members linked to the killings already are serving life sentences.

In all, a dozen UBN members have now been sentenced in the case. Nine pleaded guilty to avoid a trial and already serving sentences from 13 years to life.

Daniel London, who was downstairs when his parents were killed, said Monday that after a "long and arduous" process for his family, "I feel like we are finally coming to the end."

"My parents and myself believed and had faith in God," London wrote in an email to the Observer. "We see the destiny of all of this ... resulting in a major gang crackdown and reckoning for many others.

"Thank you to the Department of Justice and all those involved in ensuring that my parents received their due outcome of these proceedings."
