Man scattering ashes at Trebarwith Strand swept out to sea (BBC News)

A 51-year-old man is missing after being swept out to sea while scattering his sister's ashes in North Cornwall.

Shane Galliers was last seen at Trebarwith Strand, near Tintagel, where coastguards said he was caught by a large wave late on Saturday afternoon.

Two other members of the group he was with went into the sea in an attempt to rescue him but were unsuccessful.

Despite an extensive search by coastal rescue teams on Saturday and Sunday, Mr Galliers has not been found.

A grieving grandfather drowned in the sea off the Cornish coast while scattering his sisters' ashes, an inquest has heard.

Shane Galliers, of Launceston but originally from Berkshire, was taking part in a family gathering in tribute to his late sister when he died on January 31, 2015.

He was with about 20 family members at Trebarwith Strand, near Tintagel , before he was swept into the sea and never seen again.
---
The 51-year-old, who was carrying his sister's ashes, decided to walk a little farther away from the group to say a personal goodbye to his sibling.

The father-of-one was then hit by a large wave which dragged him into the water and his heavy clothing made it difficult for him to swim.
---
He added: "Shane Galliers put himself in a risky situation.
"He was alone on the rocks.
"He was of a slight build, with a back operation leaving him disabled.
"There was no third party involvement. My opinion is that Mr Galliers died in the sea."

After hearing the report, Mr Cox concluded that Mr Galliers' death was accidental.

He said: "Given the evidence that we have heard from the police, I am going to record the medical cause of the death as drowning.
