GUILTY IN - Shane, 40, & Katelin Williamson, 14, murdered, Hartford City, 5 Feb 2015

A shooting in Hartford City Thursday morning left two people dead and had schools in two counties on lockdown while police searched for a suspect.

The victims were identified by police as a man and his teenage daughter. One was found inside an apartment building at 202 E. Monroe St., and the other outside the building.

The suspect in the shooting was described as a white male on a bicycle, according to emergency scanner traffic. Police confirmed before 1 p.m. that a suspect had been taken into custody in Jay County.

Her boyfriend says he’s devastated and wants to know who would do this and why. “She was always happy, smiling, she was a happy girl,” said boyfriend.

Katelyn Williamson’s boyfriend was at a lost for words Thursday afternoon, just hours after learning that his girlfriend was shot and killed in her apartment.

Basey declined to comment as did Hartford City Police Chief Scott Mealy who was quoted in a local newspaper about witnesses identifying the suspect. That report also indicated that Whittington, who is a member of a Portland motorcycle club. And that Whittington was upset over photos Williamson had of the suspect's ex-girlfriend.

But Charles “Mad Dog” Whittington – sentenced Monday to a maximum 170-year prison term – said nothing in response.
