ST. PAUL, Minn. — A woman (Kayla Marie Jones, 25) is charged with murder after police say she held her young daughter (Azaria Jones) under water in a bathtub and drowned her two days before Christmas...

When questioned by investigators Jones said she had not slept in two days, and for some reason believed that her boyfriend had molested her daughter. Detectives say Jones told them she was molested as a child, and believed the same thing had happened to her child because she say her sleeping with her hand down her pants.

Jones said she was watching TV and heard "Save the child, don't send him to ... the monster." At that point, she says she placed her daughter's entire clothed body in the bathtub face down, and held the child as she thrashed and kicked. Jones allegedly told investigators she held the girl under water for "a minute or two" until she stopped moving. Jones said she knew she was drowning her daughter but couldn't stop.

How horrible. I sometimes wonder if people just snap, and it really freaks me out. The mom is obviously crazy, she goes on to talk about how she knew what she was doing but could not stop.. And it looks like the couple had a fight before this.

A Ramsey County judge found Thursday that a woman charged with murder in the drowning death of her 6-year-old daughter in St. Paul last month is incompetent to stand trial and may be mentally ill...

Jones was previously diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, according to Azaria's father. The woman's brother has said Jones also has post-traumatic stress disorder and depression...

When police arrived, Jones' boyfriend told officers, "I knew she was crazy, but I didn't think she would do this," and made comments about "those pills," according to a search warrant affidavit made public this week. Police searched the apartment and collected several pill bottles, the property record for the warrant showed.

St. Paul woman gets 16 years in prison for drowning 6-year-old daughter

A St. Paul woman was sentenced Wednesday to more than 16 years in prison for drowning her 6-year-old daughter in the bathtub.

Kayla M. Jones, 26, will serve 11 years of that term at the women’s prison in Shakopee before returning to the Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter, where she had been and will be civilly committed as “mentally ill and dangerous.”

The sentence, which is a downward departure from state recommendations, was agreed upon by the defense and prosecution because Jones “lacked substantial capacity for judgment” at the time of the crime even though she understood the legal consequences, Brown said.

“Azaria was full of life,” said a victim impact statement from Azaria’s father, Javon Thurmond, and his family. “She was our sunshine on our darkest days.”

The letter, read aloud in court by Assistant Ramsey County Attorney Rachel Kraker, said Azaria loved to sing and dance, in particular, to Rihanna’s song “Diamonds.”

“Kayla Jones is solely responsible for taking Azaria’s life,” Kraker said. “It was her job to ask for help.”
