GUILTY NJ - Jennifer Parks, 16, Randolph, 30 July 2005

A Morris County man was charged with murder after the body of a missing teenage girl was found in a steamer trunk in Bergen County.

The body was discovered in Rutherford early Sunday by Secaucus police officers, a spokesman for Morris County Prosecutor Michael M. Rubbinaccio told the Daily Record of Parsippany.

The officers found the body shortly after they approached the group, and the three _ Jonathan Zarate, 18, of Randolph, and two unidentified juveniles, ages 14 and 16 _ were taken into custody. Zarate was charged with murder and was being held Monday at the Morris County Jail on $1 million bail, while the juveniles were being held by Bergen County police.

An autopsy performed by the Bergen County Medical Examiner's Office determined that the girl, who was identified only as a 16-year-old Randolph resident, died from blunt force trauma, the spokesman said.

A 16-year-old Randolph girl was found brutally slain early yesterday as three teens attempted to dump her body, which was stuffed in a steamer trunk, into the Passaic River from a bridge in Secaucus, authorities said.

Jonathan Zarate, an 18-year-old Randolph resident, has been charged with murder and is being held on $1 million bail, said Morris County Prosecutor Michael M. Rubbinaccio. Two other teens, a 16-year-old from Randolph and a 16-year-old from Clifton, were also taken into custody, but no charges had been filed as of late last night, Rubbinaccio said.

The cause of death was determined to be multiple blows with a blunt instrument to her head and body, though there were also stab wounds, Rubbinaccio said. The slaying allegedly took place at Zarate's home on Old Brookside Road in Randolph.

Yesterday, Randolph police were investigating the disappearance of a 16-year-old girl who neighbors identified as Jennifer Parks. It was unclear whether there was a link between the disappearance of Parks and the Randolph murder investigation. Parks lives next door to Zarate.

Austin said police investigating Parks' disappearance asked her if the teen had any boyfriends that her parents might not have known. She said police did not offer her any information about how Parks went missing.

"It's an investigation, that's all they would say," Austin said.

Austin's 15-year-old son, Kyle Kerlin, attends school with Parks. Kerlin said Parks is a quiet girl who studies hard and enjoys reading, particularly Harry Potter books. She often swims in the above-ground pool in her backyard or jumps on a trampoline, Kerlin said.

"She's kind of like the quiet type," Kerlin said. "She's a nice girl, kind."

If not for the Secaucus PD officers being in the right place at the right time, and having their eyes open, this may very well have wound up being another unsolved case...Kudos to the Secaucus PD!

What a shame. Poor girl didn't deserve to die. I'm glad these scumbags are off the streets, hopefully for the rest of their lives.

Jonathan A. Zarate, of Randolph, is charged with murder, weapons offenses and hindering apprehension in the death of Parks.

Zarate invited the 16-year-old to his home to watch television but became angry, punching, beating and then stabbing her in the basement about 2 a.m. Saturday, Morris County Prosecutor Michael M. Rubbinaccio said Monday.

There was no sexual overture made during the time the two were at Zarate's house, the prosecutor said.

How does the Pros know if there was any sexual overtures or not? All he has is the word of the killer. Does he think that the boy grew so angry that he murdered Jennifer because she wanted to watch a different movie or TV show? I'll bet that he wanted to mess around and she didn't and it made him mad. Nothing else makes any sense.

Sounds like Jennifer was a nice girl that tended to her own business and didn't sleep around or party. She was probably a challenge to him and he lost.
Probably had a bet going with his buddies or something. Hope none of them ever get out of prison.

I don't see ANY similarities! So far, it has not even determined that a crime has occured in the Natalee Holloway case.

Just this evening, on Greta's show, BHT mentioned again that she and Jug still have very much hope that Natalee might be alive. According to them, there are many theories out there... gambling... Venezuela... they would not go into detail.

The only part of her theory that is certain is whether Natalee is dead or alive, harmed or unharmed, in Aruba or off Aruba.....Paulus & Joran Van der Sloot are responsible for it!. There is nothing certain but Death, & Taxes &the Evil of the Van der Sloots.! :doh:

The notion that an individual, Paul(us) Van der Sloot, a lawyer and until recently active member within the justice department on Aruba is going to allow anyone to enter his property without official authorityu is utterly ridiculous. And simply building American sentiments to a froth with silly nightly non-news stories is not going to do anything to bring Natalee Holloway back. It preys upon the worst of people's emotions, breeding distrust in systems upon which we must rely if there is EVER to be some justice in this case.

The similarity I see is one of shared lies , deception and prior plotting . Whether Natalee is alive or dead the three young suspects rehearsed and shared a BIG FAT LIE and implicated two innocent security men.

My question is why? Why would all of them come together to do these things? What motivates them? Is it fear? loyalty? Thrill seeking? I just don't get it.............

In the case I posted, I wonder how the 18 yr old murderer convinced his brother and another young person it was in their best interest to dispose the mutilated body of his victim? Did he phone a friend and say, "hey can ya give me a hand dumping the neighbors body off a bridge"? Did he say, "sure, I'll be right over"?

Police believe the slaying happened about 2 a.m. Saturday when Zarate and Jennifer got into an argument.

Rubbinaccio said Zarate punched Parks in the face, beat her with a metal pole and stabbed her repeatedly before dismembering her body.

Police discovered a large puddle of blood yesterday underneath the carpet in Zarate's room.

Neighbors said Zarate's younger brother had bullied Parks in the past, and they suspected the younger brother of once throwing a brick at her mother's car.

But most thought Parks and Zarate were friends.

Zarate was charged with murder and was being held on $1 million bail.

A source said Zarate's brother James was asleep upstairs. The brothers' parents are divorced. James lives in Garfield, N.J., with his mother, and was staying in Randolph with his father and brother for the weekend, the source said.

Investigators offered no motive for the grisly slaying.

Authorities said the investigation would include an ongoing dispute between James and Jennifer, former classmates who fell out over several altercations at school and on the bus that took them there.

Neighbors and classmates said James bullied the girl, and school officials put them on separate bus routes.

Police were still looking for the knife yesterday, authorities said. Detectives searching both houses removed a hard drive from a computer in Jennifer's house, a source said.

Investigators said there was no indication of sexual assault. Rubbinaccio said the victim and the suspect were not girlfriend and boyfriend.

Zarate was arraigned on several charges including first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and hindering apprehension. He was being held on $1 million bail.
