CBS News 8 Sports Director Kyle Kraska shot outside his Scripps Ranch home

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – Authorities Tuesday identified a suspect in the shooting of CBS News 8 Sports Director Kyle Kraska, who was rushed into surgery at a local hospital after suffering multiple gunshot wounds.

The San Diego Police Department received reports of a shooting in the 12000 block of Avonette Court shortly after 3 p.m. When officers arrived on scene, they found neighbors -- including a nurse -- giving aid to Kraska, who was then transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital. According to an officer that accompanied Kraska, he was alert, awake and responsive during transport.

Gunman remains at large after shooting San Diego sports anchor

Police are searching for 54-year-old Mike Montana of Superior Painting. He is a white man who is 6-feet, 3-inches tall and weighs 190 pounds. Montana was last seen driving a white minivan away from the neighborhood, police said.

Anyone who sees Montana should immediately contact police and not approach him. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Police identify suspect in shooting of San Diego sports anchor Kyle Kraska

Rob Pedley, who owns Superior Painting in San Diego, said the van did not belong to his company and he didn't know Montana.

A former neighbor of Montana's told KFMB that he and the suspect had frequent run-ins and he believed Montana had been taking psychotropic medications.

"He left threatening voice mails on my son's cell phone," the man told the station. "Not direct threats, but talking about his guns and how good a marksman he is, so, insinuated threats."

Kraska appears on KFMB's evening newscasts and hosts its San Diego Chargers postgame show. He has worked at the station since 1999 and has been its sports anchor since 2003.

So many gunshots. Horrible. Sounds like Kyle is going to pull through this. Keeping him in my thoughts and prayers.

"A neighbor told police that someone shot the rear window out of Kraska’s silver Mercedes-Benz, firing as many as 10 shots, then fled in an older-model white minivan."

"A doctor was waiting for Kraska at the hospital and rushed him into the ER. Kraska suffered gunshot wounds to his leg and the left side of his stomach. CBS News 8 confirmed Tuesday night that Kraska was out of surgery, and his prognosis was good."

CBS at 11 said that the doctors have repeatedly said his injuries are "very serious" but that he came through surgery and has a very good prognosis, but that the doctors reiterated again that his injuries are "very serious."

Someone who was in the ER (guy seemed very sweet and shaken up) prior to Kyle's arrival had more info on the inside happenings than the media since they knew Kyle was en route and locked down the ER basically and wouldn't let anyone in (even station owner, etc. - all of whom beat the ambulance to Scripps)

Anyway, the guy said that they kept counting down the minutes the ambulance was out, doing like "incoming trauma 5 minutes now" countdowns.

A standoff started in El Cajon at about 6:30 this evening. SDNV - http://www.sandiegonewsvideo.com/ was on scene from the beginning and had the exclusive on the location and was right there (long before it was out anywhere this was even happening).

It turned into a SWAT standoff a few hours in, and the suspect cut the lights and was able to see everything that was going on outside LE wise (or rather everything in his range of vision obviously) and they ended up evacuating all the nearby homes once things headed into the more prolonged/SWAT portion of things.

He surrendered peacefully just before 10 pm.

Other media did get there later on and have coverage, but I believe SDNV was the closest to the scene and the only one there for the duration.

He actually had streaming coverage for the stations that have that portions of his services/coverage.

There are a number of clips here of footage of various aspects of the standoff, surrender, interviews with neighbors, press briefing afterward, etc. , and I'd not be shocked if more may be uploaded.

Oh, and earlier there had been an interview with someone who hired the suspect to do some painting for him, to give him (the suspect - who has illegally lived at Gillespie Field airport at one point, and in Pod Storage containers in a yard at one point, and then in a shed somewhere else) some work.

The person said that the painting job was horrible and that seemed to be what preceded the (semi) veiled threats made to one individual quoted above about how he (the suspect) was a great marksman (and basically to not complain about the painting).

Also, Kyle's house had been recently painted.

The exterior of Kraska’s house was painted about two to three months ago, Maikovich said, noting that he had seen a “Superior Painting” van like the one being sought — and apparently found in El Cajon.

<snip>

Police had no comment on a motive, but a corporations website said Montana is a former president of Superior Painting Corp. and the managing member of Superior Tool & Supply.

And apparently he's been lousy at his 'craft' for years...this person hired the suspect for a painting job in 2003 (!) and still has the cancelled check, business card, etc. now almost 12 years later where she wrote HORRIBLE in red ink on it!

Mike Montana, 54, pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted first degree murder with allegations that the crime was premeditated and a firearm was used...

Montana also pleaded not guilty to a charge of making a criminal threat in an unrelated incident. A felony complaint says on Nov. 6, 2014, Montana verbally threatened a victim with injury or death, though the Zipp said she cannot give details about the case.

A status hearing is scheduled for Feb. 24, and a preliminary hearing will occur on March 2. Bail was set at $750,000. Montana faces at least 37 years to life in prison if convicted.

Kyle Kraska pays a visit to CBS News 8 :fireworks:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It was a joyous day for us here at CBS News 8, as our sports director Kyle Kraska paid us a visit.

It's incredibly hard for us to comprehend that just 15 days ago, Kraska was shot multiple times outside his house. He awakened from a medically induced coma on Valentine's Day, and on Wednesday he miraculously returned home to his KFMB family.
